I do enjoy stripping and cleaning a preloaded rifle. Making it all shiny and new, fixing any issues... but when I buy new, I expect it to be slick out the box. You wouldn't accept the shoddiness from a shotgun or powder burning rifle, it cpuld bloody kill you!

No wonder it was hard to cock. I got given one of those Bear Gryls break barrels that had a broken spring. Replaced it and it was near 20ftlb. Had to snip it down a half curl at a time till it was down to 10 and shot nicely.

Same. I'd just go for it. I used to have a Galatian that was easy as pea's to adjust the power on. The range master at the club I shot was adamant he check it each time I brought it in to make sure I wasn't playing silly buggers. I'd just go for it.
