Favourite sci fi series

I'm quite enjoying Foundation on Apple TV, epic scale and plenty of scifi, great cast too

but favourites would be Star Trek TNG, Voyager, Babylon 5, Fringe, and more recently a return to form for Strange New Worlds

Proper batty , but after buying the orginal Galactica series last year - not seen since first on TV- I bought a heavy plastic and metal Viper model, cut it open very carefully, drilled it out and fitted red blinking recognition lights (which dont show up on video/photo), blue flickering engine lights and other lighting going through mini fibre, with the battery inside and a light switch underneath- battery access, just trim off hot glue under the model and change the battery, then a little hot glue to re seal . Bought another to do with the LED this time pre soldered and some sound parts. about £15 for all the wires and lights.. I was going to install in a second one, as a little fun project. Been sitting untouched for months. My only sci-fi merch.

The original Galactica only had the one studio model, it sold for about £200k I think. Will check. Interesting to see old school pre digital effects studio models , would be worth a fortune. Star Trek original series, they only had a couple of the Hero detailed Phaser's and Communicators ever made, plus a score or more of less detailed props.

I loved Space 1999 as a kid, but plot, production values and characters are no way as good as Gerry Andersons UFO series. I cant watch 1999 these days.

fantastic build!

Used to love watching Babylon 5 on CH4 on a Saturday morning.
Another series I liked back in the 90's was Space "Above & Beyond"
Both great shows considering the limited budgets TV shows had at the time.

Absolutely, i re-watched Space Above & Beyond a few years back (during lockdown i think)....still held up and left me wanting more!

Interesting to note but had anyone seen the Cambridge based, Wand Company's release of the original Star Trek Phaser, Communicator and Tricorder? All based on 3D scans of the original series props and fully electronic and all three have loads of features, Phaser breaks into Phaser 1 (covert) and Phaser 2 - (full powerpack and handle mode), and the Communicator does load of voice clips from the show and can be used with a smart phone to use as a Bluetooth phone- the Tricorder has all the Captains logs , Shatners voice overs from the show.

Anyone ever seen these or owned one? I am sure some of us have a set tucked away or out on display. Depends if you want people to know about your ownership or not, in case people might think one a sci fi nerd.

fantastic build!
Good LED Viper build eh? Pegasus decals pulled off the internet and printed off as a sticker sheet by Asda Online.

Look up Viper builds by Baz- some gent in Australia built a life size scale later series Viper and takes it now to shows for charity events in the outback- has it on a purpose built trailer and the engines turn over plus real avionic displays in the cockpit. But made of wood and all mock up, would not really fly at the moment Bet he wishes it did.

Great to see so much sci-fi fandom. I have always read and watched it. As mentioned, 'The Expanse' is one of my all time faves. The idea of being able to cross the universe has always been a hard concept for me. But the story in this series is set in our solar system, travel through which is made feasible by a fusion torch drive system that only requires reaction mass to power it, called the Epstein Drive.
All the characters are great and for once the drama series closely followed the books imo, until the bloody covid farce cocked it up.

TBH in our place, our geek Corner - LED Viper Projects finished and unfinished (started and left for months- 6 engine LED's fitted for extra Pizzazz. just need to do the rest of the LED and attempt sound parts install) plus the Wand Company original Star Trek electronic props-

The Wand Company replicas are top notch original Trekky fan kit. Add our UFO, Original Star Trek and original Galactica DVD and that's all our Sci Fi Merch. Only watched Galactica DVD set once last year, plus re ran a couple of episodes a few times- like Living Legend - the episode where they find Lloyd Bridges and a second Battlestar.

Patrick Macnee's voice over at the start of the first few episodes is classic. .. "there are those who believe..."

Not necessarily sci-fi but I have enjoyed watching "For all mankind"
For those of those unaware of the series it's set in an alternative time line from 1969 onwards were the soviets beat the USA to land a man on the moon causing a space race to the moon & Mars

I've always liked alternative history type films & tv programs like "The man in the high castle" etc....

Hmmm, I’m a bit of an SF nerd, and honestly pretty much everything on screen is cowboys and Indians in space, sorry.

Books is more my thing, but probably Black Mirror or Star Trek NG / Strange New Worlds if I’m pushed
Most sci fi is westerns, just with different shooters n steeds. Or is it the other way round? Not 😊

I was thinking earlier, until the advent of DVD, most people never had the luxury of re watching their favourite TV series unless you had a full VHS set- unlikely unless you were happy with 2 episodes of anything on a VHS and afford/have the space for, say, 60 VHS tapes to cover one entire set of your favourite show. Imagine a set of 60 VHS because you want a complete series of something.

Regards stand alone sci fi, films, only ones we watch now and again are original Rollerball, Flash Gordon 1980 , Charlton Heston in The Omega man (a very big favourite of mine for decades) and Judge Dredd with Stallone and Diane Lane- a hokey plot but a brilliant film we often watch on repeat. Lane was stunning- music great and just like the comics - ABC warrior amazing- shame the plot was a bit dappy and Fergie, Rob Shneider was awful- he nearly ruined it - stand alone Sci Fi films- best for me are Heston in The Omega Man and Stallone as Dredd. 3d Dredd remake was pretty poor. Capricorn One was good- had and watched DVD once but unless something is a favourite, I tend to downsize it- charity shop it I used to do a lot.

The original planet of the Apes with Heston is pretty much up there- Freedom One? the name of the space ship that Heston crashes in, what an iconic scene in the waters of that inland lake.. iconic design- I think that ship was burned /damaged in the sequel and no one knows what happened with it.....scrapyard probably. After original P O T A and the sequel, they just got worse and worse though...

The original Galactica Viper wood life size mock up was forced perspective- shorter than you would think- loads of photos of the mock up online but not sure what happened to it. It was supposed to have been in a museum exhibition for a while- but think that was reported in error.. left out in the rain to rot away no doubt - or just thrown in a skip.

Remember the seventies Star Maidens, starring the gent from Blake's Seven. enough to make you go off Sci -Fi for good.

The absolute worst of seventies TV.. with production values and music score enough to make you want to just stick to paperbacks. Wondering why It seemed to look like a very poor copy of UFO/Space1999/Logan's Run- and looked at the credits- the production designer was Keith Wilson the Gerry Anderson designer.

As a kid I was into all the Gerry Anderson stuff that's been mentioned. I don't think anyone's mentioned Land of the Giants which I also loved.
As an adult I'm a confirmed Trekkie in all it's formats., including the more recent Picard. I quite enjoyed the remodelled Lost in Space series. I enjoyed the first season of Halo...got bored with the second season.
Never really got the humour of Red Dwarf... never watched a full episode.
