Favourite sci fi series

My love of Sci Fi started like many others on here, I suspect.

Earliest memories are of the classic Forbidden Planet, Troughton era Dr. Who, Gerry Anderson stuff and Star Trek. Blake's 7 was probably the next most notable thing along with the fun nonsense of Buck Rogers and Battlestar Galactica.

Never cared much for the original Stargate film but loved SG-1 and Atlantis - it seemed to me that the producers took everything we liked about previous Sci-Fi series and distilled it down into a concentrated essence. The franchise took a wrong turn with Stargate Universe though by omitting key ingredients - they left out likeable characters and wee bits of humour, the same as the remake of Battlestar Galactica did. (And yes, I know they were meant to be grim struggles for survival but constant misery gets a bit wearing.)

SG-1 and Atlantis got the balance between plot, action and characterisation just right and was my yardstick for years until The Expanse came along.

Recently, I enjoyed the first couple of seasons of For All Mankind where the Space Race was given a makeover and women were the real heroes. Later seasons went off the boil though. S1 of Altered Carbon was interesting as well. S2 not so much.

During everything, Babylon 5 always eluded me. I was aware of it but never seemed to catch up with it probably due to a teatime airing. I got that it was significant and made an effort to watch it last year. I can't remember how many episodes of S1 I got through but it wasn't many - each one of them was an ordeal and I'm ashamed to say I gave up. Lore has it that things improve greatly in later seasons - maybe I'll try again in future.

S1 is just scene setting, S2-5 is waaay better.

Sci fi for life!!!

No particular order

Firefly
Farscape
Sg-1
90's & 00's star trek
The Expanse
Dark matter - sci fi channel and apples
Invasion
Foundation
Murderbot

Nostalgia shows
Buck rogers
Land of the giants
Lost in space

Always looking for good sci fi but feel like its getting harder. Apple tv has been doing some good stuff though.

I posted before on a thread but a great 60s film is Marooned - 1969 . Gregory Peck, NASA mission controller is in a race against time to get a NASA crew inc Gene Hackman and Richard Crenna (later starred as Rambo's colonel ) with dwindling air supply, back to earth- a stellar cast- David Janssen trying to get his rescue vehicle up to the Apollo CSM- Mariana Hartley off one of the classic Star Trek episodes is one of the NASA wife's. Great drama.

BBC's Space Cops.
It's Star Cops actually
1987 BBC - only nine episodes. a typical cheap budget BUT damn good storey lines.
It's quite like the film Outlands with Sean Connery but with a bit of politics, very relevant set in 2027. Well worth a watch.

As for sci-fi, I've watched nearly them all and have many series on self burned DVD, bought DVD or H/drives all watched MANY times but the ones I watch to go to sleep to are SG-1 and DS9.

likeable characters and wee bits of humour,
Humour, fully agree, many episodes in SG1 make me laugh especially Urgo and the 200th,
and its the humorous Ferengi in DS9 as well, not to mention Londo Mollari in Babylon 5
So I can't leave out Red Dwarf
I will say Battlestar was a bit dark for me and no laughs, so while well made, it didn't quite hit the spot for me.

A quick bit of useless info.
In the early days of Gemini, before planning Apollo, it was suggested that two craft be sent. One to land men, the other to bring them back as one ship couldn't carry enough fuel, hence the plot for Marooned.
Roll on time and Elons plans were 2 ships to Mars, same reason as above OR they HAVE to find water for fuel for a possible return journey.

I've been wanting to try The Expanse and the earlier seasons are listed but missing on Prime ?

Gerry Anderson/Barry Grey's theme to Joe90 was the best 90 secs of music for me anyway. Great tune. What was the sci fi series with the lady spray painted blue - the actress who was earlier in Mad Max 2 as the female Warrior.

I was trying to find pics of our Westie watching Captain Kirks original Star Trek, but could not find them.. they were posted on the dog thread some time back. While not quite sci -fi we watch the Todd Armstrong Jason and The Argonauts a lot.. great 60s classic..
