So, I built a nice new Marine Ply Squirrel baiting box, filled it with Monkey nuts and screwed a Sweetcorn cob to the top of it!
It is sited on the same tree as the last box, eaten by the tree rats.
I set up the trail camera, sprinkled some loose nuts around, and on the box, and left it for 24 hrs.
Nothing had been touched, the camera had not been triggered??
Do squirrels not like the cold?🤨

For the first time ever a pure white albino squirrel jogged across the road in front of me and then jumped back to the bushes where he had come from.

Other than that, we have got quite a few local grey squirrels that seem to reside near a local school and fields.

They must have a great food supply with bits of lunch that gets dropped at the school plus all the food available in the fields and woods.

As mentioned, they don’t hibernate, but on the next sunny day or when temperatures rise a bit, they’ll be back out. So check out your feeder area then.

I got my first of the year in the garden this afternoon, but I’ll wager it is warmer down here.

Your not alone pal...I control the Grey's in my large rear garden & the one feeder hasn't been touched for well over a week.... just the odd small disturbance where the small birds have eaten.
Strangley though a garden on a house we've been doing some roofing work on the last few days...backs on to woodland & I've never seen so many squirrels in a three day period 😔.

Just put a box up today was a Ebay jobby with clear the Perspex window, which I then swapped out for shatter proof Perspex.

This probably should move to the hunting section.
I was out today and saw quite a few, all too far, and buggers to get close to but they are there.
I've found they will sit tight until the day warms up if they can, so best time to see them in winter, generally, is when the weather is cold enough to need some good grub, but when the sun has hit the canopy.
They emptied my feeder and have been gnawing at others.

Plenty about today until around 2pm - when the tempreture dropped and they fooked off.
My feeders all being hit over the last few days. The one in my grounds - the lid was marginally frozen up and I watched a squizzer struggle to raise it - but it got there in the end. Strong and clever little buggers.

They become less active in the cold, they also snuggle up in the dreys when it is truly cold and use each others body heat to stay warm. Round my way I think they've been mating a month or so early - I'll know for sure if the kits are out early as well.
