Piston seal material

Anyone making their own seals ?

I’m looking to make, well try to make a few various seals for a project boinger and wouldn’t mind being pointed in the right direction for materials as I’ve seen dozens of different poly’s

Chris…
UHMWPE seems v.good so far

Urethane ,90A seems the norm. some get it infused with Molly, I’ve not saw any gain using it

Venom used some form of grainy green material for the power pulse .. I liked it.

I’ve ordered a couple of different materials to try in the new year, out of interest did ptfe ever work

PTFE can be made to work, but the seals MUST be thin; otherwise, preload pressure will deform them so they press too hard on the cylinder wall and, despite being the slipperiest of slippery, will rob ME in drag.

Ptfe melts like butter in FAC GUNS. Urethane and at least 90A or Vito’s O rings. .. o rings are not my cup of tea in shot cycle over 12 ft lbs.

Got a PTFE washer in my original 45, been in there since 1981, still going strong
12 ft lbs and under. FAC is well over that. Shot cycle is harsh and they burn up. Teflon is not heat resistant. At room temp it’s great ,but in higher power guns it’s useless after 500* ,

Put a PTFE seal in a .177" Original 45 and got 14.4 ft. lb. with no other changes, so I was able to short stroke it.
Was that replacing a leather seal Jim?

I tried TR Robb PTFE seals on HW80's in the early 90's and found they were far less efficient than factory or Venom seals

Factory leather seal replacement, Rob.

I had a TR Robb PTFE piston seal in my 11+ ft.lb. HW77 for eighteen years of very heavy use with no issues.

running a ptfe seal in my 1972 premier, probably the original, and its still as good as the tempest and hurricane which are ptfe and split, also have one in a vulcan and thats a nice rifle to shoot, at 11 to 11.2 ftlb.

I tried couple too in my original mod 50 & mercury 635 magnum, found the same with a slammy feel too, went back to leather original seal in the mod 50 & O ring in the 635.
