hi all , I’ve got a question if anyone knows. I’ve got 600 acres of shooting permission and my mate has a fac air rifle at 900 fps with 30gr slugs, I’ve got 4 feeders up in woods and the latest one went up on a 4-5 feet across oak tree and the feeder has 3mm plate on the front and is 10 inches wide, So a good back stop. I was just wondering how far would a 30gr slug travel at 900 fps. I was just thinking about that farmer who shot his 22 at a bird and missed and hit a school boy in the head. By the way we never shot this gun up in the air. Just interested to know how far it could travel.

A pellet in sub 12 will go approx 400m from a recent thread so FAC, no idea how much more??

Not sure a 3mm back stop for FAC would be considered enough? Targets and pellet catchers and the likes are usually 6mm for FAC, or could be wrong

It’s 3mm checker plate. Steel and stops them ok after through a squirrel

Holly crap that’s a long way so slugs much further. Cheers

3mm steel will eventually shoot through with sub12, and reasonably quickly
With the greater energy a slug carries from FAC, I'd expect that to be dramatically quicker.

It really begs the question, if using a feeder and likely some sort of hide, why the need for FAC?

We just take different guns for a change and ones fac

From MERO a 30 grain slug with a .09 BC, fired at 900 ft/sec will go about 1300 yards at about 33 degrees. At 5 degrees it will go over 660 yards. You also need to consider ricochets and the effects of tailwinds for safety areas.

Yes.

We have some 3mm plate spinners on the range.
23gr slug traveling at 860fps, two shots in the same spot, second shot breaks through, a third in the same spot can be heard going through the tree branches in the back.

Cheers that’s interesting, yes slugs do ricochet and I’m testing some others as people have told me H&N slugs are hard and it’s a small feeder on a 5ft wide oak tree in a big wood so should be ok

Dont do it with fac air its possible that dog walkers etc will be passing, you must have a visiable back stop. I have a .25 fac vulcan 2 and thought that a modern concrete flag would be sufficent as a back stop, 5 shots and I put a hole through it!

Hi it’s too overgrown for dog walkers and private property, I don’t normally shoot the V3 with slugs, I normally shoot the V2 with pellets but it’s got my Zulus on and just wanted to shoot with glass for a change, and just 2 days ago I took my airmax off my prosport to put on the V2 so will be back shooting that next week. I know the V3 is mental with slugs I was just curious how far they can travel. Cheers

Another consideration : a slug, @ FAC power, going through a puny 3mm steel backstop & into the stately oak, will quite possibly damage/ penetrate the bark - this leaves an avenue for pests & disease, damaging the tree....

Good thought. It is also a metal feeder so it’s got a total of 6mm of metal and 25cm of wheat to go through. I’ll get my V2 ready for next week to be on the safe side
