Which Cartridges Do You Use?

I use Eley Olympic Blue (£74 a slab for plaswad, £76 for fibre) which seem much cleaner burning that the First's and worth the £2 extra.

Hull Super Fast, either 27 or 24g. Have used them for a few years and only had one dud, which was a ‘fizzer’.

They're a very punchy cartridge, but cheap. Had a bad batch a few years ago (duff primers). Only generally use them these days if I want to give a gun a good rattle for some reason.

Prefer Comp X, usually 21g through 7/8 choke (for practice) or 3/8 if I want to hit more. They're a great cartridge for sim days too, can easily do a slab or two (albeit with tips of left fingers turning medium-rare!). For competition I'd probably spend a bit more and go Pro One.

21g Comp X also shoot quite similar to the High Pheasant Extreme loads I like, so not too much recalibration needed.

Slightly different perspective.... Eley Select seem very popular, and price is great, but I know I spent an extra 30 minutes cleaning the barrels after I've been shooting them, Dirtiest cartridges I've tried and you'd think looking down the barrel I'd not cleaned it for weeks after shooting 50.

On the flip-side, my current choice are the Rio Star Team Evo. Very clean, not the cheapest, but not breaking the bank, couple of wet patches through and they're clean. Also quite fast and not too thumpy through my Browning 825.

I use what ever is the cheapest in the load for the job I have to use them for. In my experience there is very little between different makes of carts.

Folks,

Some really interesting suggestions here. Much appreciated. Decided to go with Gamebore Velocity+ 28g 7.5. Managed to get a good deal thanks to Countryman of Derby. Great shop and brilliant helpful staff! Highly recommended.
I have never had a problem with Countryman of Derby & have used them a fair few times, glad you are sorted. (y)

Just going to do a compare and contrast on these. Not shot the Superfast since I started a few months back. Never shot the Sporting 100s so it will be interesting to see how they compare.

I tried a slab of the 100's, they work, can't say they stood out over any other cartridge other than they're a bit dirty!

My memories of The Countryman in Derby go back to the original shop next to the swimming baths with Martyn and Christine. Difficult to park next to it so had to carry numerous boxes of 500 Express down the street to my car. I know they have moved and Andrew is running it now. I contacted him recently to try and buy a butt pad for my Browning 725 because the original had gone very sticky rendering the gun unusable. Exporting to France is a minefield because customs here like to randomly add 50% to the part cost and include the postage with it. He kindly provided the part number and I eventually found one here, at twice his price though!

Are there (m)any grounds near you that allow you to shoot plastic wads? Everywhere near me went “fibre only” years ago.

The fact is , you will break more clays if you shoot more and cheaper shells facilitates more shooting for your money ! The average shooter will not shoot better via buying more expensive ammo. Those folks who miss very rarely ? Get free shells from a sponsor .
I load my own , not just for the money saved
