I don't think Unit 731's existence formed any part of the US's decision to drop the 'A' bomb...

I do think it was a 50:50 decision based on two things - 1) a desire to reduce their death toll should a land invasion become necessary and 2) a desire to use the super-weapon they had constructed to see it's effects on the ground.

Doubt it, seeing as the first known cases were over 5000 years ago!
