I've got a Beresford Caiman SEG DAC on the digital front end of my hifi. It must be about 10 years old so I figured that DAC tech must have moved on and it might be time to try something new... Digging around, the SMSL Raw Dac-1 got very good reviews and was at the upper end of what I wanted to pay. It also has on-board hi def Bluetooth input which would eliminate another box from the current line up. Amazon had it at a very good price (almost £100 cheaper than Aliexpress) so I bit the bullet...
Let's just say I'm not keeping it. Sound wise, it's no worse than the seg but it's no better either. The biggest disappointment is the Bluetooth though- it's nowhere near as good as my Bluedento hd1 which remains my best value bit of hifi ever.
Looks like Stan Beresford was years ahead of his time and it's just a shame he's not still making electronics. I'll be keeping the seg for many more years yet.
