Bought a (very used) TX200 .177 and when I stripped it down, noticed the piston is aluminium and the piston seal is an o-ring in a plastic carrier pushed on the end of the piston. Does anybody recognise the tuner? Or do you think its home made? Cheers.20241102_224310.jpg20241102_210352.jpg

Nick Gibney (@Nickg) uses aluminium and "O" rings on his set ups but I'm not sure whether he has used "O" rings in a carrier. He may well pop in to give some input.

That would be a nice surprise, if either of those tuners had done the piston.
Sliding the piston in the compression tube is really tight, I mean force is required .... dunno if its suppose to be like that ?... can only imagine it robs power.

Venom used to do an alloy piston conversion for a few rifles (including the TX200). It was called an Ultraglide
Pretty sure they did this right up to when their relationship with Webley folded (2005/2006)

I'm not saying that is or could be an Ultraglide piston, as I've never seen one.

In terms of the O ring, it looks a bit on the large side.
In my experience, O ring piston seals need to be specced to a very high tolerance to work well. If yours is overly tight, it could simply have the wrong seal on it, or the O ring could have swollen by being affected by lubrication. Some O rings are not resistant to petroleum based lubes.
Using a lube like Krytox, which doesn't harm O rings, would be the way I'd go, after checking that the seal is in good order and of the correct size.

Are there any other aspects of the rifle, that look non standard?

Have you seen this @Hw95 ? Any ideas?

After blowing the pic of the piston up, the rear bearing and delrin band don't look too well done
The delrin band looks a bit of a poor fit

I'd lean to a home made job

Swollen O ring would be my guess.
Between imperial and metric sizes there are so many choices, finding one for correct fit should not be a problem.
I'd trust whoever did the original work to have got the O ring size right.

what seals the plastic nose to the piston to stop air whizzing between the 2 ?

Thats for your comments, some great knowledge there.
Kinda sure now its home made .... and like you say the o-ring has swollen

Is that a very long scoring mark on tbe piston?

Is there a corresponding scratch inside the comp tube itself?

Yep, thats a long score mark, and deep! Luckily no marks inside the comp tube with it being steel and the piston being aluminium.
Just gonna throw that piston in the bin, and curse it with a few swear words as I do it!
