I’ve recently found my Dad’s old Traser watch. It’s been in a drawer for over ten years since he passed. Can I hand wind it? I’ve got a watch winder coming from Amazon later on today, but I don’t want to damage the watch since it hasn’t been used for so long. Any advice?

Thank you.

Hello, Never heard of those Watches ?? Can you post a few pics ??, To be honest if it were me i would take it to a Watch expert and get them to check it and maybe a service, I do not have anything from my dad so well done for keeping your dads watch

Here’s a quick snap shot. The watch needs cleaning.

All auto’s can be hand wound.
With a date window, you’ll have a three/four position crown.

1. Sealed (If it screws down)
2. Hand wind (or 1 if it doesn’t screw down)
3. Date adjust (or quick set date)
4. Time adjust

If it’s going to run, give it a few gentle rotary shakes to see if the winding weight inside moves

Thank you for that. I’ll give it a go.. 🙂👍

You can’t over wind an auto but you can with a hand wound. As mentioned I’d wind about 20 times then gentle circular movements with face up.

Just to confirm, I have a Traser, and yes it can be hand wound without a problem. FYI I thought tritium vials had a 10 year half life, Is yours still luming?

Barely.. In pitch darkness you can just about make them out. The watch appears to be running ok at the moment. As I mentioned in my original post, it was my Dad’s watch. I’ve decided to use it for a while. After so long in the draw I thought it was hardly likely to work. Someone once told me that automatic watches had to be kept going or they seized up. Maybe it’s an old wives tale.. Thank you to everyone that replied. 🙂👍

I recently enquired on a new face (with new vials) and a new chapter ring as some of the white numbers are flaking off. They quoted £275. Thanked them for their time and bought a KHS Reaper instead.

I wouldn’t be willing to pay anything like that. The watch has sentimental value, but that’s a ridiculous amount. 😱

Nice watch & sincerely hope you get it back
up & running. 👍 TBH I’d probably pay that to get it fettled & back working - especially given its sentimental value? Not as popular as the mainstream ‘luxury’ brands but you’d still have a classic, well made & reliable automatic that should easily last you a lifetime with care?

Mine is a newer P59 which, unlike a lot of the others in my collection, is worn regularly as my “nightshift” work watch. Still keeps perfect time & glass scratch free despite being well & truly battered & abused👍IMG_3693.webpIMG_3697.webp

Update on my watch. It’s been running for 12 hours. It’s lost 6 seconds in that time. That seems pretty good to me for an old watch. 🤔

As it’s an automatic, it will run a different speeds depending how you put it down. One of mine runs ten seconds fast a day if you lay it on its case back over night, but use the bracelet to prop it up on the non-crown side and it runs 3 seconds slow.

Yours doesn’t need servicing though, 12 seconds a day is good enough imho

I’ve just checked the watch again. It’s been on my wrist for 24 hours, It’s lost 8 seconds. I’m actually gob smacked at that. I was only checking it out because it was my Dad’s. I’m now definitely going to use it.
