Well apart from one annoying very small problem I am very pleased with this Deleted member HW99. Normaly i shoot my HW77 out to 20 yards. That is a comfortable distance to cope with the winds that I have to put up with. I have shot it at the absolute max distance 27yds but that is pushing it a bit for sub 5p bulls as the norm. I am really not expecting the HW99 to cope with 20 yards but before it went to Nath weeks ago I had shot it at 18yds only 2 bulls and it coped very well. The 99 is as accurate as any of HW's guns certainly out to 30 yds and more. So today I set it up just the same as when I first shot it. I shot two bulls at 12yds open sights of course. Then two bulls at 15yds and finally two bulls at 18yds. As the distance increased you will see the drift of the groups down and to the left due to a poor zero. This is of no consequence as I am shooting for group size. I was amazed to tell the truth. There is lively little wind blowing in the garden but the bulls are well under a 5p. I was so pleased with the 18 yards groups that i though I will try it at 20 yards. Whoopee. The results are on the cordoned of section at the top of the card. I looked at the mess that was the groups and then looked at the groups at 18 yards and thought NO Way. Still under 5p... just. So what can I do about that. Even the ten shots I had taken since tightening them 5 mins ago and they had started to loosen Blue lockite is usualy the answer but I dont want to clog my threads up with the resulting gunge. Any other ideas.:) I even like the stock now.

You've just given me a "light bulb" moment....

I find it frustrating that sometimes my HW99 will be really accurate and other times for no apparent reason it's off - and usually the lower left and wider group.

It never occurred to me that it was connected to me tightening the stock screws as I usually tighten them at the end of a session. Obvious really but the penny never dropped

Thanks. those screws went from tight to loose in 40 shots. The reason the 99 is not as good as the 77 is the shorter sight base. With a scope it would keep up no trouble. Tomorrow I shall do a session just at 20 yards with a screwdriver to hand.

Good shooting Pete👍 If not enamored with blue Loctite, perhaps a wrap of Teflon tape, which is fairly easily removed , if needed.
 
I love my HW99s in .22 calibre(another Deleted member rifle) Nice shooting and yes my stock screws have come loose before . Even with my standard of shooting i immediately noticed the difference. Now it doesn,t have to come apart again for a while i will loctite my stock screws.
 
I've had trouble with loose bolt 99 CS 500 stock. Luckily after tightening it stayed tight. I put it down to change in moisture content of stock, having kept gun in central heated conditions. To go from tight to loose in 40 shots indicates another cause. Under head of bolt is a serrated lock washer, replacing this with new may cure problem. Other models can have lock washer and plain washer. Plain washer must always sit against wood with lock washer between it and head of bolt.
Always possible too much tolerance between threads, in which case Loctite 55 thread will secure and not hinder function.
Thread lock paste, unlike loctite 55, will not allow giving bolt additional rotation should it be required.

Chris has just suggested plumbers tape. I shall try that first.

How about Plumbers tape?
 
Small skinny o-ring on the screws sometimes helps...

Ptfe is designed for olives. Sometimes when wrapping olive, ptfe will show on thread. In the absence of anything else, it is sometimes wound on thread to attach part of valve that screws into radiator. Requires multiple wraps and is not ideal. Anyone buying valves for radiators should buy 55 and do job properly.

During my apprenticeship we were told that it is thread tape and plumbersmate (used to be BosWhite) on olives - interesting to see that screwfix sell ptfe as "Thread Tape"

So what exactly should i get for my stock screws please.
