Hi all, I have had airguns for some fifty years. I have always gone for .22 for some reason feeling that .177 is not as capable being smaller. I’m looking at buying an FX Impact and would welcome some advice as to which calibre I should go for. I do a little bit of vermin control Rabbit, Rats etc. But mostly it will be used for target shooting. Thank you.

What does that men?
My attempt at a joke.
.22 v .177 is a fairly regular question that comes up on the forum.
There is a search function if you wish to see previous threads, or I'm sure someone will be along with a comprehensive explanation soon.
Cheers ;)

It becomes almost political, been done to death.

For my own very narrow perspective, .177 works well for all of what you describe, but that discussion detail should be under the hunting section.

I have searched for answers to this question but could really only find answers relating to specific guns. I understand flatter trajectory etc but having had no experience of .177 was uncertain about its ability to be effective on vermin.

1000's of rats and 1000's of rabbits nor as many squirrels and pigeons..but a lot since 1977 with .177.
Started on that caliber with a Bsa Club ,then a Hw35 and FWB 124..
Still happy with .177, but use .22 and .25 as well, not because of the calibre question, but because i like airguns of all sexes.

I’ve mostly only ever had .22 up until recently but I think some of the heavier .177 do fairly well, you still notice the difference in a wind but I have mega gone over to .177 now tbh and think most future rifles will be in this cal. for me, I also might be advertising a copper m4 soon in .177 👀😉

.177 is the Gentleman's calibre, not for ruffians. 😀
Practically speaking it is less efficient than .22 meaning a springer can potentially be rougher to shoot although I've never found that to be true in practice. You will get less shots per charge in a PCP because physics but who really cares with a bottle gun? Flatter trajectory but more susceptible to air turbulence. Cheaper than .22 as mentioned. If you can live with the provable effects of less mass travelling faster, everything else is hearsay. Buy what you want. The centre of the target doesn't care. (y)

Lacing a .177 pellet into sumpin the size of a 5p coin is akin to lacing a 50 BMG size slug into a grapefruit - both results are predictable.

Well .22 shooters sh1t in the garden, .20 shooters pee sitting down and the .177 are for us aristocrats and gentlemen !
I only shoot .177 simply because of its flatter trajectory and less worry about hold over/under than .22

There's only really 1 way know if you like it or not mate - get one and give it a whirl out the back with a good cuppa and a bunch of stuff to shoot at 🙂👍
