unexpected day off today, as my brother said the van was in for mot, so had a session in a small 1 and a bit acre wood next to the laying pens. i checked the feeder last night and there was still a handful of feed in it, and a bit of peanut butter left in the jar, so it hadnt been emptied. i topped it up to save me a job this morning, so i could just get set up straight away. this feeder has produced a 25, a 10, and a 10, on the last 3 visits so i was pleased with the 6 that put in an appearance this morning ;)
i read recently that mr P claims that shooting squirrels actually causes their numbers to increase :rolleyes:
well christopher, i'll help you out with simple mathematics.... if peter had 6 sweets and he gave 1 to john and 1 to paul, he wouldnt have 7 sweets left now would he 😲

Not so simple. Packham is absolutely correct in saying that culling can lead to short-term population increase and there is good scientific evidence to support this (and for some other species where culling takes place).

The devil is in the detail. Intensive, particularly landscape scale, culling using all available methods does work. It's costly and takes considerable effort. Unless you are on a small island, the pressure can't be relaxed even when the numbers of the culled species are low. Over most of the country you are pi##ing in the wind with squirrel control. On the other hand, at sites where reds are already found or are to be reintroduced, every culled grey counts. Ditto any area adjoining red squirrel habitat.

There are plenty of other reasons to hunt greys - sport, food, tree protection etc. and they are a feral non-native species. It just doesn't necessarily help the reds.

christopher is not correct at all mate, he simply manipulates facts and figures, tell fibs, peddles misinformation, and spins his web of deceit to fraudulently support his position, using exactly the same arguement that he used to oppose to the badger cull, to create the illusion that he's correct.
where is this good scientific evidence ??? i often hear ''scientific evidence'' quoted to back the anti grey squirrel shooting agenda pushed by ''grey squirrel protection'' ''animal aid'' ''grey squirrel org'' ''PETA'' ''viva'' ''league against cruel sports'' ''university federation for animal welfare'' steven harris and christopher.
i've checked some of his ''scientific evidence'' that he claimed backed him, and i noticed that the evidence doesnt actually contain any evidence.
its worth noting that if a shooter kills a grey squirrel we're causing their population to increase, but if one of his pine martens kills a squirrel then they're doing a fantastic job of controlling grey squirrels :ROFLMAO: ;)

My personal reason is every shot tree rat is one less to chew it's way into my loft ( work shop or house) and eat the wiring and that is good enough for me
 
This is not the place to discuss sources but I would be happy to PM some links if you like. I used to work as an ecologist and biostatistician (some years ago) so have reasonable knowledge of this area, both of the field studies and the population modelling. I also shoot squirrels at times and would like to see greys eliminated and replaced by reds. Happy to play my part in it. We can leave PETA and the like out of it.
