Purchased a Scout LT2 on a whim. Not going to hunt with it, purely plinking.

Can someone explain the difference between the clay and steel bands. Additionally, I’ve shortened the clay band and it feels right to my anchor point but it’s not as powerful as I would have thought.

Additionally, where’s best to purchase new bands??

What ammo are you using now?

The bands you use need to be matched to the weight of your ammo to work effectively. If you are in the UK, which I am assuming you are it would be pricy to get simpleshot bands again unless they are sold by proshot here but there are plenty of good options, the cheapest for good quality bands would be from Snipersling, but again you would need to know what thickness to get before ordering, thicker does not mean more powerful!

There are also lots of band makers that will make them already tuned to your ammo and draw length which may be a good option too and for trying different bands, wasp slingshots sells pre-made bands too but will be a standard size to be cut down. ultimately if you stick with it making your own will be the way to go once you have found what you like and will save a small fortune plus you can play about with tapers to really tune it in for what you like.

180 in a bag/ so 1.1grams I guess
You will probably be looking at a .4 band then I would think, I am shooting 7mm steel at the moment that is 1.4 grams and I use a .4 and a .45 band for those. Snipersling definitely do a .4 as it is what I am using and have done for a long time now, wasp may have premades for that I’m not sure. If going to a band maker for light bands I would suggest natty catty bands, you can fondle them on Facebook if you have it or I can get you details if not if you need them.

thanks, I’ll order some from snipersling now and give them a go.

Again, thanks for all your help

Let me know how you get on with them, I have used that band as my 10 meter setup with both 7 and 8mm steel for a long time and love it, helped me win quite a few events! I don’t know what pouches are on their pre-made bands as always made my own, normally about a week to 10 days from them but you do get free delivery on any order size which is always good

Sorry to bother you again. So this is where I am at the moment, noting I’ve never used a catapult before.

Can consistently hit a can at 10 yds. Body position 90 degrees to target and same anchor point on my cheek.

To hit targets at varied distances would involve different amounts of holdover. Do you literally rangefind and visualise these holdovers, very much like a range card?? Should I shoot paper the same as with an air rifle or am I just over thinking.

Sounds like you are well on your way and doing everything right and doing pretty well! 10 metres is a pretty standard distance for a lot of shooting and competition events, it’s what I shoot the most.

As for different distances, yes you just adjust your hold over/under, it all comes down to practice and knowing your setup, different bands will shoot differently, larger ammo will have a bigger arc etc, all comes down to what you like and what distances you intend on shooting. The best thing you can do is find what you like and stick with it, get to know your setup and just figure it out in all honesty.

For 10m shooting I use super light bands and a wide frame and for distance stuff I use a narrower frame with a much faster band. With the light setup I place the tip of the frame on my target and it is spot on, my fast setup is spot on at around 20ish meters, I aim low for anything under 20 then have to start holding over past that. I do step back drills a lot and it just becomes instinctive, take a few steps back and shoot then keep going and coming back until it becomes natural, I never think right that’s 18m I have to aim here and never use a rangefinder. I think I am also the only person I know who uses different setups for different disciplines!

Another thing to consider is your point of aim changes with different elevations too, you may not need to practice that depending on what you want from catapult shooting.

Shooting paper can be very beneficial and let you see exactly where you are at, if you can mount your target on a steel plate you will get perfect 3ishmm holes, paper tends to rtear a lot and not give clear results.
