Hi all

HW30SF on order for my lad, hopefully ready to collect in a few days.

Will get him to try the open sights for a bit, but can see a scope will be needed soon enough, especially if blind me wants a go.

Think I'd get a Hawke Vantage 2-7x32AO, which the local shop I'm getting the gun from stock and at a price better than anywhere online. He only has Hawke mounts though.

Google has lead me in the direction of Sportsmatch mounts, which I'd have to order online, and that the single screw is plenty for the HW30, but do I go for the medium TO2C, or the low LTO30C? Is the low too low for that scope on that rifle?

Cheers

No. Low will be good, but medium will be the best for any break barrel, in case you want to use them on anything else.
I have Sporstsmatch medium in most BBs

I have this scope on my HW30 and a note of warning if your thinking of buying the Hawke metal flip up covers the one on the objective lense will not rotate all the way around for different parallax adjustments in the low sport match mounts but will work with the covers it comes with, but it is a tight fit,

I have Sportsmatch lows on all my 30's which have this very same scope on, you'll be fine. Under no circumstances though let your RFD talk you into the Hawke equivalents;)

I use sports match low mounts on my 30 and find it gives great alignment and just clears, works a treat for me

By the tie the HW30 and the HW30s get 5k if pellets through the they smooth out nicely. And any movement during the shot cycle is minimal, and sturdy one piece mounts are not that necessary and anyway you got arrestor pin holes in the main tube if at all concerned any scope creep could occur. I think a 2 to 7 x32 is a good call on the HW30 i have an old simons 2/7 X32 AO from the early 2ks on my 70s HW and its ideal for close rats or reacting out and touching that pesky magpie that you have tried absolutely everything from behaving like a magpie around your place but its persistence cost it its life. Honestly the things we must endeavor to do in order to do the obvious in the uk today is bizarre.

I started off with a low mount on my HW30:

but I found the iron sights being visible but fuzzy in the scope distracting so changed to higher mounts:

Sportsmatch T04C medium rings mounting a Hawke Airmax 3-9 x 40 mm scope on my HW95L rifle. I believe that low rings will be fine for your setup. The Hawke Vantage 2-7x32AO objective lens is 39 mm or 1.5" in diameter.

Here’s a pic of one of my HW30s with a Hawke Vantage 4x32AO, on a Sportsmatch OP57 mount, which is more than man enough for such a rifle. Also under a tenner from a certain online supplier…

Hmm, isn’t the comb a bit low to be ideal with the higher mounts? Would be a tad for me. You could always remove the irons and file them away for use later.

I have mine set up with one of the Williams receiver sights. Really makes these small guns much handier than with a scope. I have some scopes on bigger heavier guns such as my TX200, but like peep sights on these little light rifles such as the HW 30,35 and my old FWB 124.

Two piece mounts generally give much more adjustability. On most standard HW stocks I’d always use low mounts if possible.

Only thing with the sports match lows, is you then have only about 1.5-2mm clearance between the Parallax ring and the action

The Parallax ring and zoom ring on mine are really stiff (it's the Airmax 2-7 z 32 rather than the cheaper vantage etc) and it would be great to fit some fishing castors or throw levers, but it's impossible unless I switch to medium mounts
