I used to love the handheld consoles in the 90's and was fortunate enough to have an atari lynx.

A couple of years back i got into collecting and modding them, as most needed re-capping from poor quality 90s capacitors.

Anyone sense love the retro gaming nostalgia?

Hi Yuss, not so much the handhelds, but I used to collect retro gaming consoles, had pretty all the ones available in the UK, at one time. Got rid of them all when I moved here, had a massive declutter and they got given way or sold, had some really nice bits and pieces too, a Framed ZX Spectrum and Framed Gameboy being a couple of them.... See pics...
Some of my boxed, mint condition consoles...

This was a little kit that built your tiny arcade complete with tiny scree n and mem card, it had about 8 games on it IIRC? It was only about 3" or maybe 4" tall!

This was my Hyperkin Reton 5, which you could play most console cartridges on, great bit of kit for its time, but the provided controllers were absolute rubbish....!

Me

Only ever really had Nintendo stuff growing up so that’s what I collect personally. We did have a PS1/2 but aside from a few games I didn’t play them as much. I don’t have any “good” photos on me but I have all of the hand helds with IPS screens and a good portion of the games (all Pokémon and most Zelda games). And a good portion of the main consoles, SNES, N64, GameCube etc if you can call the GC retro.

Not a large or much of a collection by any means as I don’t have the space or funds anymore but most of what I have now is just what I liked playing growing up.

As well as the usual PS1/PS2 stuff.

I also 3D print game displays which I sell on eBay and repair the actual games and consoles when I see them up for sale for a good price.

One I did for someone once to display all the main gameboy and advance Pokémon games with GBA.

Another GBA display I do, (I also do normal gameboy ones). All the files are readily available online (makerworld) for anyone to download and print themselves.

Very nice collection. It can easily get out of hand. I had a C64 back in the day too, with many hours of time spent on it.

Looks great that. The GBA's are so easy to work on too. The screen mods take it to another level.

Thanks :). Yeah super easy consoles to work on and repair.

Although these days cheatingly I just use one of those handheld emulators, the gamelab ones. Surprisingly good value. Extremely good audio, larger backlit IPS screen, solid controls etc.

Just to save me wearing down my original consoles and games really as I’m not too bothered if it goes tumbling down the stairs, or 1 year old launches it across the floor, where some of the games + consoles are super expensive now.

On a side note, what are those multi game hand held controllers that you plug into tv called?
They have loads of the old games on,had 1 years ago with galaga and galaxion, would like to find another but i only get the above sort of games.

This takes me back to the 80's when I had a ZX81 and later the ZX Spectrum and which I wrote a couple of games for using a Z80 machine code assembler called 'Zeus' for those who remember that particular software. This of course was a time when individuals could write decent software and games for these consoles as these machines had limited performance due to the Z80 chip. With the introduction of the Spectrum 48 though, it soon became teams of programmers writing games with the 'Ultimate Play The Game' team probably being the best of them with titles such of JETPAC, ATTIC ATTACK and my favourite of them all 'LUNAR JETMAN'. The big pain for these 2 computers though was of course having to use a tape cassette player to load games and which was always a hit and miss affair.
I've tried various Windows simulators for the various consoles I've owned from the early days but don't get that same sense of excitment they once held me in, the exception being a SNES emulator with which I can and do enjoy playing the 1994 classic 'Donkey Kong Country' and a early European version of 'Super Bomberman'. I wonder what other's favourites are from this decade ?

Yep, I have one of those, its a Game Grid2 Emulators, (although the console itself says "Gamepad") it has something silly like 50k games on it, with emulators for most of the major consoles. Plugs into the TV via HDMI and has two Playstation type controllers and uses a mem card to hold all the games and emulators.
Its not bad, but getting the controllers to work with every emulator can take a bit of work as they are all different!
Good emulators though, have a lot of the well known popular games, but also lots of obscure ones too!

Its not like that. All the games are in the hand unit which in my case was a bit swoopy bat like.
it plugged in the tv by scart and was AA bat powered.
really cheap end BUT all the old games, lots of crap but half a dozen good ones,101 games i think.
i think there was several styles of hand unit.

I'm very much in the retro thing, basically reliving my childhood. I refurbish Sinclair Spectrums, although I have a ZX80, ZX81, Spectrum 48K, Toastrack, +2 etc. as well as an Atari 520 STFM, IBM Mod 30 etc etc. When itr comes to consoles, PS1, PS3, Xbox OG, Xbox 360, Xbox One Series X. I've also got a Spectrum Next KS1.

Saying that, I'm pretty rubbish at gaming these days, must be getting old. :D
