Hello,

My ATA SP Sporter is developing rust in the vent gaps between the barrels. I can't get anything in the small gap to clean it and I do not want to use any chemical which may stain the black paint finish.

Any tips?

See attached. Thank you.

0000 wire wool and oil and rub lightly . Ali foil can take it off, again use with oil and not to aggressively.

Another one he did .

Hi Bradley. In the past I've made small brushes by using ten or twelve bristles from a brass wire brush and binding them with fly tying thread to about 5mm from the end of the bristles thus making the "brush" end reasonably stiff...any strong sewing thread would do for the binding though...then a coat of superglue over the binding...in the absence of brass bristles you could try copper wire as bristles from electrical wire but you may have to bind them closer to the end to retain a bit of rigidity at the "brush" end depending on their thickness...hope that makes sense.... That would allow you to get in the ribs and remove as much of the rust as you can, then keep the area in the ribs between the barrels well oiled. Browning legia spray would allow you to get it right in there but wd40 to clean and displace moisture is fine. With the barrels off the gun and as much of the rust removed as possible you can make sure whatever protective oil you use runs all the way down inside the ribs from muzzle to breech before wiping off the excess. Obviously, clean and dry the barrels thoroughly before applying your chosen protective oil...i have found browning legia very good though personally. Hope this helps. I have used this method for years as I use my shotguns wildfowling near to the foreshore in a wet salty environment.
Cheers
Chris.

If you can find some brass stock of a thickness just smaller than the gap, you could fashion a scrapper tool that fits in there. A little oil and use the scrapper and it should scrape most of it off if it’s only surface rust. If it’s pitting at all, a brass brush would probably work best. Start light and see how it goes, then add pressure if needed.

I have found that rubbing small rust spots, freckling, with a hard steel rod, like the shank end of a new drill bit and a little oil does wonders. You might try a feeler gauge with some oil, feed the gauge into the gap and bend it around while rubbing.

(Not really).

The bristle pipe cleaners (the ones where you’d normally get one or two in the pack, with the 20 ‘standard’ ones) get my vote too.
Good idea.
Years ago I used to coat the joint on the rib on my side-by-side with vaseline if I was going out in bad weather. A wipe over the rest of the metal helped too.
These days, to protect the rib, I would opt for the above (Waxoyl) or use silicon grease.
I know from using WD40 it does NOT stop rust.

If you want something a little more harsh than a toothbrush, a washing up brush is about halfway between that and a scrubbing brush.
Best to be careful in use though. It won't immediately scratch but it you're rough with it it might.
