  • the Daily hi thread just say hi :)

Rabbits and best shot placement ?

A spot on heart shot generally also takes out the autonomic plexuses/ plexi behind the sternum, short circuiting the mainframe.

12 ft lbs. PCP. .177 high neck shots works nicely out to 35 yds
The same with 22LR. @50 WMR @70 and 22 Hornet @100
Control or sporting same shot place -ment equals no carcase damage
And no runners 👍

Head shots only sub 12 and fac air, used to supply a bird of prey center. Unfortunately i don't any more as there arnt enough to make the trip to the centre worth it. A good session is two rabbits due to vhd. It used to be around a dozen a trip!

But that's what makes the heart shot more tricky, along with the shoulder getting in the way etc.... :)
Chest cavity is a much larger area than the head area likely to contain the brain. (y)
Tis why I mentioned earlier that one should/ must know well the anatomy of one's quarry.
I've had guided hunters, though cautioned about shot placement, shoot too high up on wild boar ( which carry their internals different to a deer ( heart's lower) ), but used to deer, shot accordingly...I hate blood trailing boars !

Rabbits with a std power airgun the brain is my target ear hole to the start of the eye , place it mid way . To be fair i shoot a lot of rabbits with 22 air , 22 rimfire, .22 Hornet CF, and 223Rem as the go to placement from the rear atlas joint , head on where the fore-head . Chest shots are not my aim and the carcasses are all used ! Mess up a carcass with a lead bullet ? It needs removing , its death for birds of prey that ingest lead

Head shots with my redwolf using mako slugs in 177 sub 12 ft lbs.. the body is an easier target but always the chance of wounding and losing them in the undergrowth or crawling back down their bury.. it’s pretty much instant with the mako slugs .. just check your gun to see if it likes them

thanks for the replies but I did say I always do head brain shots just asking about FAC heart shots

Fac with slugs it's virtually' in the middle.'
I very purposely got a fac maverick for shooting a difficult very large garden in daylight, on foot most shots are free hand 10 - 40 yards . Side on chest is biggest and quickest face on in the middle. From the back in the middle.
Length ways shots are devastating.
Similar to rats. Slugs at 46 lb
Shoot in the middle favouring towards the chest .
