Price rises and the great attitude switch.

What with costs and therefore prices rising has anyone found that what they considered their preference in airgun manufacturers to now be too much to swallow price wise?
Also on the other end have you found that what you once thought of as not quite good enough now appears to be in consideration?

I have, and also taking a look at the secondhand prices of the more quality end, guns that are not young enough to be part of that price rise have risen also!

In the first instance I passed on a fleeting love affair with an FX Dreamline compact 6-8mths back, it ticked all the boxes but was £1100, i gave my head a wobble and thought why would I spend that on a sub12?
As they're quite an acquired taste there wasn't really anything else about like it, so I forgot about it.
But now your average R10, 100 & S510 isn't far short if what I considered too much for me!
Now it's made me wonder if guns like the NP02, Webley Raider, Reximexy's or whatever they're called are worth the risk.
I only want something 10-shot, compact, with at least 50-60 shots per full in 177.
I'm starting to think fhe bread and butter is out of average people's price range now.

Problem with most interests and hobbies that you pursue for a while is that you still think of the prices of things when you researched everything at the start.

The longer you have been interested, the worse it appears. And the general inflation costs over the last 2-3 years has only exacerbated that.

My reximex ixla is a good as anything out there , very accurate and consistant .
Puts other manufacturers to shame . And only approximately £700 new !

I'm sure it's a very good rifle, I've never seen one let alone had a go of one, the one thing that springs to mind us that £700 would've bought me an R10 or nearly an HW100 a year or 18mths ago!
I've seen an R10 secondhand with no scope for £599 locally, although it's not the worst price I can't help thinking it was probably £800 new so not quite the 2/3rds rule of that.

The consensus until recently was the range for used guns was around 2/3 new price. If you’re looking to get rid of one to get a new one, I’d go on current price- if I bought it 20 years ago I wouldn’t sell it 2/3 of what it was then, after all!

You either go on current price or have no real benchmark. If the buyer thinks it’s too much they don’t have to buy it, can always see what else is available. But again, if you’re selling to buy, you want as much as you can get toward it.

In terms of the cheaper end, it’s going to be a case f get what you pay for. I’ve got a rexi accurate and it’s Bob on, but not all are. Higher prices should mean better QC (and yes, I’m waiting for the usual comments there) and better quality. Steel and metals generally are up to twice the price a year ago, and that has to go somewhere.

Many premium brands have been overpriced for years, when you think that basically you're getting a low powered airgun that in terms of power does the same as the lesser known brands. When money gets tight people want value for the pennies, that's when reliability and function take precedence over aesthetics and brand name.
That's why for the last 3 years I've been encouraging new shooters and old to look at the Gamo PCPs, accurate, great value and seemingly bulletproof. A new GX40 is less than half the price of a new Prosport!

Yep, I deffo think about costs, my last two new guns were Kral NP02 and Hatsan Mod60, both at the cheaper end and both as good as other more expensive guns.....

A R10 doesn’t come close in build quality of the reximex to be honest
The finish on BSA made stuff these days is very poor

Recently I've become interested in Chinese PCP and co2 pistols/ carbines to the extent I've got four now (how did that happen!)

Before I was into big heavyweight springers and single stroke pneumatics.

Some of the change in direction is financially led sure, but some is also due to me becoming a weakling!

The Chinese Lego guns are loads of fun, accurate enough for my use (backgarden shooting), easier for me to shoot and cost pocket money prices. And they are all black and small, so easily to 'appear' into my collection, cough.

Yup new prices are in some cases 50% more than they were only a few years ago but the quality hasnt risen by 50% and some are even lower quality none of which is good for the wallet or the shooting experience

Secondhand prices are, rising too but imo not quite as fast so there are still some reasonable deals to be had if you are patient, i have been down the expensive pcp route a few times now and for me and the shooting i do its simply not worth it

Guns are a tool, like other tools, buy the best for your requirements...
You know the drill...the bitter taste of lower quality lingers long after the sweetness of lower price.

I've always been attracted to things at the lower end of the price range. Hasn't stopped me shooting better than others who spend thousands. It's not what you have, it's what you do with it that counts!

air rifles are all over priced any doubt compare what the same money buys in a shotgun better fit finish and the performance you pay for in an air rifle but don’t receive until they are the same best option is to buy air rifles second hand

Not really.

I think it depends on the shooting discipline as well - I just cannot see a Gamo matching a Redwolf of Annie etc at BR, however if we are talking groups at 40 yards, then yes they may well do. Horses for courses.

its one of my hobbies, so I buy what I want and don't tend to look at price. Of course if someone is selling a S200 for £2000 then its probably going to get overlooked

I think the last time I bought a brand new air rifle was when the Remington Express came out and I only bought that from curiosity.

Pretty much everything else I have has been acquired second hand so I find the rising prices of new airguns impact less upon me personally.

I would rather have an older quality air rifle at reasonable money than a budget new rifle for about the same outlay.

About 4-5yrs ago I bought a P15 which at the time was £300, they're just shy of £500 now, despite all the bad press they get it's performed faultlessly (touch pallet wood stock), maybe I was lucky, but maybe others were unlucky?
Nobody wants to say their £2k hypergun was naff.

Well Im going the opposite direction as Ive just purchased an Anshutz 9015 at probably the most expensive rifle Ive ever bought. Ive always enjoyed a tinker and love an underdog, Ive spent more on tuning some cheap guns than they cost in the first place

Now I’m shooting BR and looking for absolute accuracy Ive chosen to buy probably the best rifle for the job for me anyway, rather than trying to make something cheap shoot that well, if it ever could and be consistently that good.

Ive enjoyed some great cheaper guns, fettled and tinkered only to end up where I could of been with a dearer gun with no hassle or work needed, that said BR is very focussed so Id say outside most rifles remit

Now on the other side of my locker Ive my favourite budget gun for years, a Benjamin Akela that Ive spent ages getting right, but its a jem around the farm and I dont mind knocking it about. Ive also had a kral project on tje go for months and months trying to make a dirt cheap BR rifle, I regged it, along with loads of internal changes, I bought and s400 barrel to help accuracy and finally an HFT500 barrel which helped a bit, but even this highly modified kral with an hft500 barrel just couldn’t match an out the box hft500 every card. So I decided to stop tinkering and just buy the right tool for the job.
