Is my memory of 45 years ago fading? I seem to remember PH used to recommend the above as a cleaner MIXED WITH WATER?

Anyone have comments?

Rings a bell, was it to do with cleaning powder burner barrels initially, before using it neat to finish?

I looked it up, it is not a lubricating oil, it's a bore cleaner/nitro solvent. It was mixed 1 part 303 and 3 parts water. They called it "Aquoil"

It's been going round my head for about 3 weeks, been having trouble with a muzzle loader. I seemed to remember it was a mix of water and oil and could remember it was a combination of the 2 words. Been thinking WatOil and OilWat. I should think more Latin......

Just used some, my daughter and I like the smell, the wife hates it, mine is a very old can (30+) does the new stuff smell the same ?

Hello, It use to be the go to shotgun bore cleaner and yes it does have a nice whiff, But i now use a Napier bore cleaner and find that much better

Its usually for nitro powders.
Hot soapy water is the best thing for blackpowder guns.

When I was an apprentice we used cutting oil mixed with water it looked the same but did not have the pungent smell early 303 had.

What about Pyrodex? I used some black powder solvent last time and ended up with the breech completely clagged up with gunk.

I would use hot soapy water for that as well.
The very first time I shot BP I attempted to clean the gun like any other using oil.
All I ended up with was gunge that looked like black sugar!
It was a bugger to clean off.

Unfortunately they have removed the smell. Its not the same now. Parker Hale Black Powder Solvent still has the wonderful smell though. Good enough to be rubbed on as aftershave.

Got the same one here . I got it with a cleaning kit that came with a gun cabinet I bought from an old shooter.

I use it now and again with my . 22lr
