Over the last few months ive been thinking about maybe having a go at metal detecting. I think there maybe a few detectorists here so can any of you point me in the right direction to get some knowledge of the hobby please, websites, forums etc. And the the 64 quid question, how much would it cost for a decent starter set up?

There is one in sales.
I'm not sure of the model but just in case.
 
This is a very addictive hobby! Had my first detector given in 1976 and been at it ever since. My advice on machines is buy what you can afford leave the Amazon specials well alone. Look to spend around £400 new and less if second hand , there are plenty of good machines from the likes of Minelab,XP, Nokta and Garrett. Some of the top end machines are silly money now so see how you get on, there are plenty of sites on FB who will provide as much information as you need and also paid digs….Good luck 👍🏻👍🏻 ps any more you need to know drop me a DM
 
Hello, I started Detecting in the 1980s and was a member of a few clubs, Went on a lot of Digs and have my own permission although i do not got much these days, Detectors come in all different Makes/ Types from beginners to the top budget users, I have seen so many people buy the latter and cannot use it as to complicated, My last best detector was a Minelab Safari, Now its just a switch on and go jobby but with better electronics than a lot of other makes, Whats your budget Telbert and i can advise further,

I looked into this a while back, the problems I found is other than some beaches there are not many places to do it, clubs have waiting lists, land owners who let these on are few and far between as well. If you have somewhere you can go all well and good but you may struggle if not.

Having the Minelab Safari for many years i can say its top notch, but for any one looking to start detecting i would highly recommend the Minelab Vanquish 340 at £200 or the 440 at £300 , Personly i would go on the 440, This would be good on land and beach including wet sand, Why, Because Minelab use Multi Frequency where most have one or two but with a switch over , , Like my Safari had, You cannot get better, You have 4 Search Modes where the detector controls the electronics until you can set up your own Modes, Then its a matter of getting headphones and a pin pointer about £50, Small garden Stainless spade, Let us know how goes Telbert

I have used these, they are easy to use, accurate, and reliable.
Much is punted about online regarding detectors, mostly a load of codswallop for one hidden reason or another.
I have detected, in Essex, on all ground types from black saltwater sand to tip sights.
Had the Safari, great machine, I now have my faithful e- trac, two vanquishes, two minelab gt sovs, if you know you know, and a box 800.
I have the full range of C scope detectors also.
And a Garrett at pro.
The vanquish detectors, for the price, are spot on,simples.
All my work is on permissions,where I show and declare, or my own land.
Trinovantees pre Christmas gold, pre Christ Roman silver, and a Gallo belgic 1/4 stater.
Many hammered silvers and more.
Oh, and some stories to tell regarding ww11 aircraft munitions, and anti aircraft.

Hello, Good post, Having used many detectors my self from the 1980s i can say Minelabs with Multi Frequency is hard to beat
 
It is a great hobby, though not so easy to find permissions nowadays.
I have many detectors, should sell a few really as they take up a lot of room, and I only need two, slow and deep minelab etrac,and a fast c scope cs6mx.

Hello, I only have 1 now after PXing my Minelab Safari as it was getting to heavy to swing about, Post yours on here for sale as i know a chap who runs a Detecting club
 
The saf is a great detector👍
I will advertise them after the Christmas period,in the add section👍
 
Thanks for all the replies, loads of info here. Im still researching so maybe be looking at buying in the new year. If i were to buy second hand is there anything i should be staying away from/ looking at specifically?
On another note i bought a magnet for fishing and been out with it Saturday afternoon, no treasure, just a couple of hours out .

Hello, I would keep a look on sales if Gummage put some of his detectors on here, More so if he looks at selling a Minelab Vanquish ???? Most shops have second hand detectors as people trade up, Who are near to you ??

One year for Christmas my wife bought me a cheap metal detector just for me to try before maybe moving onto something better. Well it was great fun but l didn’t buy a better one because as others have said, not a huge number of places to us it and the one l have is good enough, especially when looking for bits that fall off the mower and strimmer 🤣.
