Metal detecting

Any advice available from you guys? My son is 9 next week and my wife has suggested getting him a metal detector.

Where should I look and what is best for starting out? I guess we would use it on walks and at the beach.

Thank you.
Hello, For a 9 year old i would recommend just a switch on a go detector although it might be not to suitable for wet sand on the beach, on Walks you would still need permission from land owner, something light and swingy with a clear target response

Hello, Yes these are ideal for anyone starting, the 440 would be my choice, I rate multi frequency detectors having a Minlabe Sarari when the first came out in 2008/9 , started in the 1980s with and old Garret, , a Garret pinpointer would help. although you can buy cheaper, Although if you just want a switch on and go detector the one i use is very good, Main thing is Discrimination, Although a lot of good finds can be missed with to much discrimination like ring pulls show good signals which could be silver, When i started the advice was no Disc and dig everything until you can learn the signals from old rusty iron to gold/silver/bronze/ As you had the Safari you should know they were a top detector although some what heavy, The 440 although not as technical would be a good choice
Just to add after having the Minelab Safari when i use to do a lot of detecting i went over to a Golden Mask 1 + UK 15 kHz just for a potter about the fields

I'm thinking about dipping my toe in the water, mainly to use on the beach, any recommendations, nothing to expensive as I'm a bit of a tight arse

Hello, If your only going to detect on beaches then look at a Pulse Induction detector from C Scope CS 4 Pi , you might find a good second hand around £200, or check out some Minelab detectors that will work on beaches wet and dry sand
Thanks for the info (y)

Just to add if you want an all rounder for beach and land look at a Minelab Vanquish 340 , just remember to get a control box cover for rainy days, head phones are not expensive and garden spade, also a pinpointer around £20
Yeah I've just been looking at that one

Hello, Slightly over budget but you would not get better and it has multi frequency which is a good advantage over a single frequency detector, ,
I'm seriously thinking about selling all my kit, so there would be a few quid in the kitty

Hello, Ok, But you maybe lucky to find a good second hand Minelab Vanquish 340 ? There is one for sale at Detecnicks West Sussex £200, I have purchased from them and found very good, Laura was at the helm
