Well, I don't think I ever posted the answer to my photographic question. Two and a half years later I can tell you. It's an Otter trap on the coast of mainland Shetland. I spent a week on the island visiting these old relics, some now preserved as ancient monuments. Coastal and loch-side dwellers used to kill Otters for their pelts.
The trap in my photo was in good shape although the simple wooden trap doors had long rotted away.
Inside, the flat natural flagged floor had heaps of spraints on it.

Answering like a flash, yes black Combe, I accidentally put up the wrong picture of the same shot( low quality and grainy), but taken across walney Cannel and down towards the estuary.
Good spot by the way.
