Well, I don't think I ever posted the answer to my photographic question. Two and a half years later I can tell you. It's an Otter trap on the coast of mainland Shetland. I spent a week on the island visiting these old relics, some now preserved as ancient monuments. Coastal and loch-side dwellers used to kill Otters for their pelts.
The trap in my photo was in good shape although the simple wooden trap doors had long rotted away.
Inside, the flat natural flagged floor had heaps of spraints on it.

A few from the last week or so. Rural Aberdeenshire, New Deer area.

This view of the Bennachie range is about a mile along the lane where I live. It is different every time I walk up there, I make no apologies for posting it previously.
