78F & not a cloud in the sky...
So, a wee Leupold mounted fresh, on my 10/22, & needing to proof test a " closet find" - off on down the hill we went.
The blonde is some semblance of a Savage *87 model semi - auto, apparently a special edition ordered up in quantity by an outfit in south Texas (Talo Marketing), sometime in the late 70s ?? All Savages in this configuration seem to have either 20" or 24" barrels; this un is 16". The carbine had a " cow pat" lacquer - cover up finish & a rust covered barrel, so I did a bit of tinkering on stock & action & took ' er for a maiden voyage with the Ruger... The wee Savage done O.K., just a couple kinks to iron out.👍👍
Now, for " Critical Thinking" part IMG_20260314_133951162.jpgIMG_20260314_133901840.jpgIMG_20260314_133909716.jpg...
DO NOT SHOW UP IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO A 20 YARD TEST TARGET WHEN A REDNECK IS SIGHTING IN A RIFLE.🤦🤦🤦👍

That’s great way of using a newly acquired gun whilst you’re sighting them up”
To have vermin pop along for their maiden kill .
Right time Right place !
Great shooting buddy 👍

Bad luck for him that you missed the target and he copped the round. At least you still had good weather and plenty of time to get them zeroed.

😉

Thanks. It was pretty surprising, me having put lead downrange already, sighting the Ruger, that Mr. Squirrel could have missed the racket of HV carts.

'Twas a fine afternoon indeed, to plant a bit of lead seed into the hillside...I think the little Savage will prove out well ( it shows promise)...I just need to fabricate a bedding pillar/ sleeve & add a dab of epoxy for a better fitting of the single mount lug to the stock.👍

I'm guessing it was a ground squirrel by the big old hole behind the post?

Yes sir, one thing we have here is a'plenty of ground squirrels to keep in check. Our tree squirrel populations, whilst a there's a few locally, much prefer the mixed oak & pine forest, in the hill country to the west, between here & the coast.
