Ok, I've decided that for my 40th I want to get a thermal spotter and or scope.

I'll be borrowing a few different ones to try out first and see what suits me best before making the plunge.

So it got me thinking...

I'm really not that interested in seeing film of farm animals under thermal.

I want to film some mad stuff with it, that none of us would ordinarily get to see 🫣

Keep your minds out the gutter 😆

I've made a few tentative enquiries so far and actually had quite a lot of interest from other curious guys like myself.

First stuff I'd like to film is actually Motorsport related..

Would you be curious what a fully race tuned engine looks like on the Dyno making full power pulls under thermal?

I'm also making enquiries to some guys who work on brakes for race cars... Now they get insanely hot..

Would you rather see some really mad stuff like that or would you rather just boring animals?

I wanted to put some film together of some crazy stuff we wouldn't normally get to see.. any ideas?

A friend uses one for work as a heating engineer and he works with biomass and oil fired systems .

He did a video the other day that I can't find now showing the heat traveling round a biomass system . It was like watching molten steel moving .

A Spitfire or Mustang (any WW2 fighter ) engine on full chat - I'm sure if you contacted some of the companies that run these planes they might be interested, as it would add to the experience of the customers to see the engine working as part of the tour or flight.

The first time I came across thermal outside of some borrowed military stuff was with some nerdy plumbers about 20 years ago..

It's one of them things we never really ever think about, but it's super interesting when you see stuff like that.

It's potentially not that far fetched as it goes. My old man maintains an airfield with a few old warbirds...

I just wondered if it would pick up a pellet flash hot or cold .

this is cool though . normal lead pellet at a 10kg steel weight .

It was a good video and I wish I could find it again . I dare say I will have to ask him to send me it .
I know a lot of electrical people will use them . An offshore company I worked for had one and it was used to diagnose problems with the generators we hired out .

I never used it myself mind you.

I’m getting my DNT Hydra next week, I am planning to film the inboxing on Whitby Quay checking the temperature of fish and chips as they leave the shops.
After that I am at the Le Mans 24h for the week so have plans for engines, brakes and track “vapour trails” from the hot tyres at night. I should also be able to tell if drivers have wee’d themselves at the driver change😁
I will be making some shooting related content too, but there is just so much scope!

Tannerite?

Great idea, love it.....
Few ideas....
Looking at your house (or someone elses) when its hot/cold. likewise a C/H system or boiler producing hot water and the pipes/fittings getting hot, eg: taps, etc.
Cooking, eg: a gas/leccy hob, pots with boiling water, a kettle heating up, an oven, a toaster, a hot water bottle, a flask of tea, etc.

How about looking at those those hand warmers, heated gloves, etc?

What about a shooting related one, eg: does CO2 gun get hot when rapid firing? so would have to be a mag fed gun. I suppose you could try this on a pcp too, eg: does the action / barrel get hot, or what about shooting at a metal target, eg: pellet catcher, does that heat up when hit, especially multiple times at speed?

Soldering a bit of wiring or a copper pipe fitting, what does that look like in the thermal?

Fast setting cement (prompt cement), what does that look like when you cast it, as it gets hot when it goes off really quickly.
As above what about looking at various batteries, eg: Lith-Ion batts/chargers, etc?

Just couple of thoughts off the top of my head.... look forward to what you may come up with.

Usually, gasses only get warmer when being compressed, this is why an air cylinder is warm when being filled. The action of a gun de-pressurises the propellant gas, so it would cool the action.
