Picatinny!!!!!

Trying to mount a new scope with some QD mounts onto a new rifle with a pic rail and having no end of problems. Having come from dovetail mounts I find them a PITA in comparison.

I tried some hawke ones as I though a named brand would be better than a budgets, but I can’t even get them on the rail.



So I bought some budget ones again QD format and although better don’t sit flush on the rail. Picture looks worse than it is.



I think it might be the coating is slightly raised on the corners and hoping a bit of filing will make it sit flush. The other one is slightly better but doesn’t sit level to the rai either.



I don’t know if it’s just some bad luck and tight tolerances between the mounts and the rail but it’s a hell of a faff.

Does anyone else have this problem or am I just a numpty?

Which rifle?
Which mounts?
I would expect the rifle rail has been manufactured with the rail to picatinny spec. and the 'budget' rings are the issue.
I use Spuhr, Gieselle, American Defense, Eaglevision and can mount repeatably on any of several rifles.
Wulf and Accu-tac are reasonably priced rings. There are others.

The worse offenders are the Hawke Precision steel ring mounts. The budget are some vector air ones X-Accu ones.

The only one I have been able to get on nicely are some really cheap no name ones I had lying around. The square angled internal profile seems to be the key to making them fit.



But they are for a 1” tube and the new scope is 30mm so can’t use them.

Gun is an EB Arms XV2.

Reluctant to buy any other named mounts. I’ll be looking for similar style budget ones as above or try and bodge the budget ones and see if that improves things.

The photos are rather blurry so not sure but it looks like you havent got the mount seated in the cross grooves it looks like the mount bolt is on the rib.Like i said blurry photos so cant be sure

I have never had a dovetail mount move on a 22LR or an airgun, so the picatinny rail seems a bit overkill to me. And usually limits where you can place mounts (must line up with slots) so that is also annoying.

I don’t think it is a cross groove issues as if you look at the left side or top edge in the photos it’s sitting flush to the rail, if it wasnt in the cross groove then I would expect both edges to be raise.

Given up for tonight but will have another look tomorrow to be sure.

Yes like i said the photos are not clear enough,it was just a thought

Are mounts ( rings) Weaver or Picatinny ? Weaver will ( though ill fitting), work on Picatinny, the reverse is not true.

The Hawke ones are weaver and the budgets are pic. Plan to get the file out later and see if I can widen them a bit.

Although not QD I have used the above mounts to mount a 30mm tubed scope on several guns. They come with two sets of clamp blocks which are reversible. I've used these on dovetail, BSA oversized dovetail and weaver/ picatinny just by swapping the clamps.
I've yet to find a gun/scope combination they won't fit. Double strap and seem well made. Tbh I've no idea why they are so cheap or so unknown.

I bought an eaglevision picatinny rail and UTG Hi Pro LE Grade Picatinny QD rings and the pair work fantastically well together.

There is an adjustment to be made on the rings so the lever closes with the right amount of force.
