HW35E still in the conversation ?

I'm getting back into AG's as age/eyesight is bringing my black powder revolver shooting era to a close. I bought a little used HW35K (made in mid 2018) last year having sold a 97K because it was too heavy for me & arthritis in my hand made loading the pellet difficult. I chose the 35 because it had the iron sights that I'm used to, but the sight base is too short for me & I reluctantly had to fit a 'scope.
I notice you have fitted a sight to the rear of the 'scope rail & wonder if you find the longer sight base beneficial ?

nb. great looking rifle !
Thank you. In interest of accuracy, yes, a longer sight base / radius is always better than a shorter one. The receiver Williams sight also beneficial as it effectively removes a standard rear sight's focus/ setting sight margin for front blade from the equation; your eye automatically centers front sight in the Williams' rear aperture. The rear aperture also gives option to enhance front sight/ target view clarity/ brightness simply by either increasing ( brighter picture faster acquisition) aperture diameter or decreasing( focus/clarity) aperture diameter. Apertures are available from .050" - .140" or with a certain model from Centra brand, dial adjustable size , for target work.👍🙂

Many thanks for your response, do you mind me asking which sight you have & does it directly fit the 35's rail ?
I've had a quick browse on the 'net & am confused by the wide range of variants, although obviously some are not suitable for AG's

They mention the williams sight is 3/8ths so 11mm, will the clamp up on a 13mm/ 1/2 inch dovetail on an old hw35 or will they not manage that.?

No worry, yes, they clamp right on. My sight is a Williams model FP- AG.

Same here;- came back to this about 5 years ago after a 40 year hiatus and picked up where I left off with several new HW35's (35K, 35K Grey Laminate and a 35 Export Stainless) and enjoying them all but, the standard 35K is the best of the bunch - no twang and smooth as silk. I also bought an Air Arms S400 PCP to see what all the fuss was about - fine gun but too clinical for my liking.

If i can mention particular firms - I bought a couple several years ago through Brownells Australia - they went offline but may be back. Did you have look at the UK Brownells site? Looks like one or two popped up but the look pricey.

Others I bought even longer ago directly shipped from the US to Aus from Airguns of Arizona, but you pay a lot for the shipping so it's a last resort.

The only ones I've seen on any of the UK sites are the lever action rifle versions not the airgun ones :(

Brownells list them £125.
I saw them a lot cheaper is it pertec or mome place similar name sell air gun bits.

If you could PM me the link to where you are seeing them on Brownells I'd appreciate it, I don't want to hijack this thread

I've just looked though and cannot see any on Brownells UK, indeed no peep sights for 125 quid whatsoever?

Apologies if you get this twice but the direct message seemed to fail

Wow, that is a REALLY good price for a FP-AG; I spent ages looking for one on this side of the pond and never got anywhere close to this (ended up buying in the US through family...)

For those just starting to look into these aperture sights, a note to point out that 2 different sights are linked in the posts above: AG and GR versions of the Williams FP ("foolproof") series. The difference is how high (and low) they can be adjusted so depending on your specific rifle and/or typical shooting range, it might be important to chose the right one.

The FP-GR has a longer height arm which means it is more likely to foul the left stock when it is lowered for adjustment to shorter ranges. A relief cut into the stock to accommodate this should at least partially sort it out but is of course a permanent mod. (at least at my level of woodworking "unskill"...) Or, alternatively, a riser under the foresight...

The FP-AG's shorter height arm should not reach most stocks and I believe its smaller adjustment range should be sufficient for typical airgun ranges using the Weihrauch OEM front sight.

To give a rough idea, here is mine on my HW50s (UK 99), zero'ed at 10 meters.

With my sight base, I have at least 5 milradian upwards adjustment available to me which is more than enough for me and my rifles.

All that said, these are not sights I would want to be constantly adjusting as, even with the "Target Knobs" option, you still need 2 sizes of screwdriver to change elevation ("only" 1 for windage). They're brilliant for either known range paper punching or fit and forget PBR-based adjustment chosen to your rifle/pellet/garden/range/quarry combination.

'got a bit carried away rambling there, sorry... Hope it helps,

Thanks for the explanation, I'm tempted to have a punt on them given the price, even if the website does look a bit windy (thanks for the link @om606)

What is the point of the target knobs then? I assumed they were for easier fine adjustment, but if you need a screwdriver regardless, what are they actually for?

If sat at a bench, paper punching, you use the knobs to " click", no different to using a scope. ( Williams' " click value" will be determined by the sight radius length on your rifle ) You merely leave the small locking screws backed out a bit to allow target knob use. Williams does make a thumbscrew to replace the main elevation lock screw, for the purpose of quickly releasing main elevation lock. The difference with a Williams is, unlike a Redfield or Lyman receiver sight , Williams sights have no zero lock/ return to zero screw.

Makes sense, thanks for the explanation

To be honest, I'll be using it for target stuff so once 'set' I doubt I will need to adjust often, if ever

Worth taking a chance on, as not only is the price good but seemingly in stock and willing to ship to the UK

I assume mechanically the sights themselves are no different, and I could add on the target knobs if I decided I needed them? (and could find some)

You're welcome. Target knobs/ screws could be knocked up by anyone - they're a 6 - 40 TPI.

Chris is 100% right as usual, I'm just chicken that I'll forget to tighten the locking screws and lose one in the scrub... hard to replace in a small and very metric country 😊

Please let us know how you get on with the seller website, I'm thinking I "need" a spare...
