Looking to buy a springer, for targets only but I don't really know what I'm looking at and no idea of the differences between models.

Have briefly used an Air Arms Pro Sport and thats about it, found it a dream to shoot but the cocking lever being resessedd into the stock I found awkward.

  • Preferably a Weihrauch & around £300/£400 (new or used) I will however spend more if models in that price range aren't going to be much good.
  • Ideally something fairly easy to shoot, am not used to springers so trying to find something which is going to have as minimal kick as I can get, I do however understand I'm not going to get something like a PCP, so don't panic I'm not dreaming. Im trying to find like the best of the bunch kinda thing
I was looking at a HW35K or a 99S which is the right price but heard mixed things from people down the range, local shop also has a really nice HW97 but its around the 600 mark and not sure if i want to spend the extra.

If anyone is able to offer some advice on which models to look out for

HW99s. Nice and light, accurate and top quality for the price
One of these looked nice, only thing which put me off was the cheek piece on the stock, looks really low.

Were targets my primary usage, I'd skip right past break barrels - they're more a sporter/ hunter/ field gun(s). Look to the HW 77 & HW 97 - more target oriented & by virtue of their weight, will ( should) give least " recoil".
In my estimation, a lot of folks try & turn " field" guns into something outside their initial build intention...

Where are you in Essex?
If you want to try out before you decide, I have these, hw 30, 97, 35, 98, and old s200 PCP I have a field in Hatfield Peverel and could meet you there, if that suits just let me know👍
Thanks for the offer, I'm over by Colchester but not up your way very often. There's a few people I've seen down the range with springers so I can probably get my hands on one to have a go

Think HW30 is lower power than other models? Just so OP is aware.
Good call. They are about 7.5 to 8 ft/lbs, but sublime to shoot, and accurate to 40 m, I prefer .177 for it's flatter trajectory.
I have several, and in no way does the hw30 compromise in performance, it is even a very competent hunting rifle to about 30 m or more.

I find my HW77 in .177 best for serious targets, my HW97 in .22 also great for HFT type targets/spinners etc but the most fun is with any one of my three HW35's in both .177 and .22, open sights or scoped.
Although the HW35 may be classed as 'field' gun, the locking barrel and weight makes for consistent accuracy for me.
In summary for your question, for targets I would go HW77 in .177.

I might keep any eye out and try snag a HW30 if I can find one for a good price. might be a nice way to get into them, I don't see myself shooting more than 40m with a springer for the time being.

Thanks

I have 5 of them, (hw30), some standard, one with a TBT kit, and other mods, one with a Welsh Willy kit, both with Britseal piston seals, and one made up from obtained parts, an expensively tuned trigger bought from someone high up in bell target competition, modded barrel weight, polished piston, hand made spring guides, conical internal transfer port, a delight to shoot with dioptre sights.

Whats your take on having springers tuned?

I think im between either a HW30 or spending out on a 77/97 but everywhere I look i see bits about tuning them.

Required? Or just a nice to have?

Thanks

HW35E I've only had mine for just over a week, and have already fallen in love with it. In my opinion it is a beautiful looking gun, it's easy to operate with the release lever and easy cocking, the trigger was perfect out of the box (I don't know if the supplier did any setup prior to sale), it's quiet to cock and close, what recoil there is comes straight back so no jumping, and it is superbly accurate.

I've only been shooting springers for a few weeks but these two targets were 10 shots in each, over 25 yards, with just open sights, I'm pretty sure with a scope on it it would mostly achieve pellet on pellet in the same hole.

They all shoot very well as standard, tuning and tinkering is not necessary for either model, but there are some of us that love to tinker our rifles, I like them to be at about 10.5 ft/lbs, or high 10's, but that is just my preference.
The hw30, will always be less powerful, as designed, my intent in tuning them is to just quieten down the rifle, and have a fast yet smooth shot cycle, (they already shoot very well from new).
The other thing often done to hw break barrels, very simply, is to fit a delrin 'shoe' into the cocking arm to prevent the arm from rubbing on the main tube.
