ok we have been getting issues with file storage etc and our file storage size is getting ridiculous
well we have looked and the issue is people attatching videos and massive images
some attached videos are over 1/2 gb
when the 20 biggest videos on here = almost 15gb you know we have problems
also videos saved on the forum slow pages etc down massively
we will unfortunately have to start removing videos soon and they can no longer be added.
we have also restricted picture sizes now to 5mb and 2000x2000 pixels
please note a hd tv is 1080x1080 and next hd 1240x1240 so im pretty sure on a laptop or mobile screen pretty much double hd is good enough quality.
please in future if wanting to add a video do it as a link and host it on youtube etc.

this thread is open for comments but its also a warning we will be removing a lot of these files soon.
as the forum is growing more and more all the time we at present have over 2million attachments on the forum and we cant keep going with big file sizes
its just not practical and slows the forum down drastically

Fair warning I will start deleting videos at the end of the month
I do not know where they are or what threads they are in
I just see many folders with over 1.2tb of videos

Thank you - good to identify a problem.

Perhaps we should all post links to videos without uploading the video itself?
With a brief description to help others decide?
Is that possible?
Would it help?

Please can you - or anyone else - suggest an idiot's guide to reducing the size of files?
One of my photos get "refused" earlier today - I had no idea what to do.

I am probably not the only old git whose Internet knowledge is minimal and struggles with anything remotely complicated.

Erm earlier today size limit Ona pic was 40mb and 160000x160000 so what the hell were you uploading 😂

I always re-size my photos before uploading so they are only between 0.5 and 1Mb. It's easy to do, my phone saves my photos to Google cloud so I can view and download them on a laptop. Once downloaded just open in MS default photo app and click on the 3 dots then choose re-size image. Even if you drag the slider to low quality it's more than good enough for forum pages.

This is a good move for any IT system in my opinion.

Using apple devices ( phone and pad) when selecting images to upload from a library you can select the picture “size” in the options menu

I try to use the large file size ( if I remember to select that option) it reduces simple 2mb images to 0.6mbs etc etc.

It's a sensible and fair change 👍

I've always been surprised to see attachments so readily accepted as most forums I've used in the past required pictures (and definitely videos) to be hosted elsewhere.

I think it's good we can attach for sales threads, but when just memes and videos are being posted it makes sense to simply use a link from a site 👍

I know some have trouble, but it's just a case of leaning the process 🙂

Just checking if my normal sized pics still work

They do 👌

Might be worth looking in the forums photography threads?
Those into photography, myself included, can end up with some pretty big files.
I always back up my photos and vids on my own laptops (eg: more than one) and on a separate NAS drive.
As far as I know my vids are always via a link to YT, I didn't think you could post a vid straight into the forum?
Anyway all sounds sensible to me, as you say the storage needs are only going to go up as the forum gets bigger.

Text uses almost no space its the images and video that ramps up the storage, memory and bandwidth.
Plain text, MS Word docs, simple text typed into the forum threads, etc, yes.....but not if you've attached them and put them in a PDF or a Publisher doc or a Powerpoint presentation, etc which can also be large (ish) files...
