Do I have a problem? Umarex G17 Gen 4 BB

Hi guys, wonder if you’d spare an opinion (I’m new to the game so very interested in learning).

Recently, I purchased two Umarex guns: Beretta 92A1 and a Glock 17, Gen 4, both steel BBs, both with blowback action. Lovely replicas both of them, I shot them both for the first time on Tuesday.

The Beretta - as specified in the instructions - is shooting roughly six magazines (just under
120 shots) with one 12g CO2 cartridge.

The Glock however is getting through just over two magazines (roughly 40 shots). After this, I
hear a loud hiss (as if the gun is discharging CO2) and the gun will stop firing. I have tried
three different CO2 cartridges and the “issue” has occurred every single time.

I’ve reached out to Umarex but no answer yet.

Do you think I might have a faulty pistol/magazine? Have any of you experienced similar behaviour?

Yes it sounds like you have a problem. Did you buy it new? If so take it back and get it fixed or replaced. You need to deal with the seller not Umarex.

Not me personally, from my perspective your problem started the moment you bought a Glock.
Personal dislikes aside it should still work even if it is a Glock. You should get more than two mags worth from a cartridge and it shouldn’t dump any gas as it runs down. I don’t know what the problem is as I also don’t like BB guns much either and haven’t come across this particular problem myself.

Agahah! I’m beginning to think you’re correct and to wish I had bought a non-blowback pellet system (like a 92FS or a Walter CP88).

But hey. All part of the journey. I will take it to the store and see what they say.

Co2 guns vary enormously on the number of shots.
I get 70 shots from a Crosman 357, my wife gets 35 from her Umarex S&W.
With having blowback, that uses some gas too.

If you want blowback and pellet the Walther PPQ from Umarex is probably one of the best. It uses the belt magazine system similar to the Glock version but the PPQ is better suited to this application because of the grip angle, the Glock’s grip is too much of an angle and this adds friction to the belt and ruins the trigger pull. The PPQ isn’t perfect by any means but with a bit of silicon oil lubricant on the belt and a decent run in period it can be pretty good. Fairly accurate and great fun but if you are after accuracy forget blowback completely and go for something like the CP88.

Hi I have glock 17 gen 4 great pistols and I have the beretta bb same guns as you the glock is probably leaking from were you fit the co 2 bulb there is a seal there I had the same problem I replaced the seal but if the glock is new take it back to the rfd you bought it of if it’s s hand replace the seal doesn’t happen vary often mine you buy a spare mag for it as the ge4 is probably the best one made in the glock range of blow backs it’s field strippable you can buy all the spare parts from bagale and kirkwood mate if I was close to you would fix it for you mate hope this helps mate I love bb great fun not everyone will agree mine you hope you get if fixed and don’t forget all ways put a drop of Pell oil on the tip of the bulb keeps everything lubed hope this helps

Yes indeed, that was my thinking too (regarding blowback use and variation in shots). My Beretta gets roughly 6 magazines but the Glock doesn’t.

However, what worries me most is the CO2 discharge towards the end of the cartridge.

I agree and actually own the Gen 5 MOS pellet - the trigger is stiff as a brick and this, plus the blowback severely impacts my aim (not that I’m any good in the first place yet ).

But boy do I love the look and feel of a Glock! This is mainly why I buy them - but I still want them to function properly!

To be honest, I think my next pellet pistol will be a non blowback. I got my eyes on a Beretta 92FS or Walter CL88 nickel and wood. Or if I feel fancy a Dan Wesson (never owned a revolver, might be cool)

Not fond of the PPQ design unfortunately, but I appreciate the input nonetheless.

The CP88 has the better trigger and is available in 4" and 6" versions. The 6" is marginally more powerful, the longer barrel giving the gas more time to accelerate the pellet but it is marginal, which helps make it slightly more accurate at longer ranges, 10m rather than 6 yds., but the better trigger probably contributes more.
The Beretta is a big handful and feels great in the hand and can hold its own against the CP88 accuracy wise for most purposes but the trigger, although good, isn't as good as the CP88 giving that the edge for target shooting.
The best revolver, and the most expensive is the Umarex Smith & Wesson 586 but it is discontinued so you would be looking at second hand or old stock. There are other offerings from Crosman, Webley (the MKVI) and Umarex (S&W M29/629, Colt SAA) available in pellet and BB all of which will out perform the Dan Wesson. Have a search through the pistol section to see which might suit you best, lots of info and opinions there.

For info I have owned a Dan Wesson but moved it on, dissatisfied. I still own a S&W 586 with 6" and 8" barrels, a S&W M29 in BB but use pellets, more accurate than the pellet version, and a Webley MkVI .22 pellet.
By far the most accurate is the 586 but my favourite is the Webley, .22 pistols are uncommon.

I do think I’m leaning more towards the 88 since I already have a Beretta… knowing myself I’ll try and hustle a good deal out of the dealer by buying both

EDIT: attached video shows the issue.

Short, one second hiss right at the end of the cartridge, after (normal) loss of power and it’s consistently happening halfway through the third magazine (17 shots capacity, so about 40 shots).

For comparison, my Beretta M92A1, same calibre, blowback, CO2 cartridge and BBs, goes through 6 mags and doesn’t hiss at the end.

I also own a pellet Umarex Gen 5 MOS and that goes hrough 3-4 mags (about 60 shots) and does not hiss at the end.

UPDATE: took this is to my dealer who confirmed there is in fact no problem.

The lad there has been in the army, plays air soft weekly and clearly knows his stuff.
He even demonstrated the exact same behaviour out of three of their brand new pistols and rifles.
Very knowledgeable bloke and definitely put my mind at ease.

Glad to be keeping it as I’m having a lot of fun with it.

On a more troublesome note, I handled a Umarex Water CP88 pellets and now I have to have one!!!

I did today, a second hand one!

Although I recognised that it was a fine piece, it did not speak to me. I found it way too large for me… maybe I need to see it in a smaller barrel? Or maybe it was a different version to the one you mentioned.

Either way I’m glad I scratched that itch. I also saw a Dan Wesson and felt the same… maybe revolvers aren’t really my thing… YET!
