I can see other people's headlights coming well before they ever get to me and pre-dip accordingly before they get to me...

So why do so many selfish w⚓'s wait until their headlights are burnt into my retinas before dipping theirs 🤬.

👍 have you noticed, even at 60 with low beam on you still illuminate the white lines in the middle of the road to see well in advance where it goes 🤷🏻‍♂️

Agree most new cars have auto light and always switch late.

Tesla are my annoyance at the min, walking the dogs in a 20mph zone and they auto full beam!!! Why?
Started shining my phone torch at then to turn them off!

I very rarely drive on main beam - I think a lot of people who do seem to think I haven’t dipped, so stay on main beam.

It happens a lot.

They’re too lazy to flick the stalk themselves these days and let the car do it. The car is crap at it though!
To much "safety" crap on cars now thats not needed.
why not just pull the light stalk.
next they will have us using our phones to pay for our shopping!
it was bad enough when using a 4 digit number was deemed to hard ,so the touch was brought in.

One one hand: I don't like too much technology intervention in driving....on the other: Some things needs to be automated to protect us from the moron drivers.
So something like automated/ intelligent dipping, would be welcome.

I didn't realise 'auto' dipping was a thing! 🤦

I used to own a Citroen C5 that had multiplex wiring and that used to have about a second delay between pulling the stalk and then being routed through one of the 19 CPU's before arriving at the headlights - that was bad enough.

High Beam assist. Our Vitara has it along with the auto window wipers , Radar brake assist ,adaptive cruise control and a whole load of other electronic stuff most wont use

I wouldn't say it was auto dipping, more auto main beams. At least on my car that's the case.
A thin film of grime over the sensor will reduce/stop the system. My car , for some reason doesn't recognise some headlights as headlights.
Otherwise, it's the usual ignorance, lack of attention, forgotten they're on, or your slowing me down in the car in front of me, do get out of the way n look what a tosser I am. Phones n in car displays don't help these days.

Our Tiguan has Auto Full beam so you don't touch the the stalk. Most modern cars are the same.

Personally I don't use it for the very reason you mention, they don't auto dip until it's too late and a car has come round the corner, despite me noticing it way off in the distance.

If I'm honest the normal headlights are that bright that the full beam isn't necessary anyway.

Many modern car lights are so bright where you actually think they are on full beam and they are actually on dip..

Been blinded a couple of times with full beams when out with the escort in the past. I just blind them back with 600 watt of lighting in return. They soon get the message.🤣

"when out with the escort " That's a car we're talking about right ?
One on my many toys.😉

Unlike cars of old, the electronic systems in modern cars are not directly connected to the system that the switch operates, for instance, there is no direct connection between the headlight control switch and the headlights, instead the switch is connected to the onboard computer system, it is the this vehicle management system that is connected to the lights and not the switch. It is the same with the accelerator pedal, instead a lot of modern cars have potentiometers connected to the pedal that sends a signal dependant on pedal position to the engine management system that is also getting information from other sensor controlled systems to determine how much fuel is squirted into the cylinders and when to ignite that fuel based on how much stress the engine, gearbox and wheel sensors transmit back to the engine management system. Bring back good old fashioned plugs and points 😎
