I'm contemplating a pulsar, who's owned one what should I look out for, how did it behave for you, what other rifles should I contemplate?

This is thread started a couple of weeks ago plenty of people chatting about it.

I have shot a few very very good accuracy, but i dont like electronic guns. I would recommend an airmaks krait as mentioned earlier I have two. (y)

I've one in .22 and I have to say, I find it quite difficult to say much about it. If your contemplation has moved beyond the idle, casual stage then you are probably either passing through, or are already clear of, the two things many don't like. And, in my experience, that's what it's confined to, not liking rather than faults or flaws.

Some don't like the aesthetics. It's not for you then because there's virtually nothing you can really change. Whatever changes you may make, in silhouette it'll look the same.

Some don't like or want to try an electronic trigger. It's not for you then because that's the trigger.

Past that, massive shot count of 200+, extremely accurate and consistent, IMO opinion it looks great and it does something that reveals how well designed and built it is. When you hold it, it feels heavy and unwieldy. When you shoulder it, the weight obviously doesn't disappear but it's totally different. It isn't heavy, it just feels solid and really well balanced.

if you know of one and have changed your mind about wanting it then let me know i'll have.

Pros: Excellent gun build quality. very accurate. easy to shoot. good shot count per fill. easy to cock. excellent trigger. hold there value well.

Cons: it's an older discontinued gun. How many mags are you getting with it? original mags are no longer available. replacements are expensive. The gun is heavy, you won't want to carry this around all night ratting. The computer is a gimmick and you will never use it. perhaps only to turn the laser on and off, to show friends. 2nd hand there still expensive it may be worth considering using that money towards a more modern alternative. BRK Ghost example.

Had one for a very long time, excellent shot count. Don't believe the BS regards electronic trigger, takes about a mag to get used to. In this configuration it was heavy, but the Bipod took the weight off. I'd recommend it.

Seems like a fair assessment :)

Do Daystate not supply any compatible mags for these guns at all? Granted IMO they've always been OK-at-best for spares, however you'd expect something as recent as this to have support for a fair time yet..

you can get the newer compatible mags that suit most modern Daystates. but there not the same as the original pulsar mags as the newer ones can be double-loaded. as that feature wasn't carried over as there's a slight size difference. you can also buy the 3d printed ones for the pulsar but it is recommended you remove the pulsar indexing pin

The new mags work in the Pulsar, @nashslash is unfortunately mistaken in this. He is also mistaken about the computer (no offence buddy), but it runs the rifle, your using it whether you think you are or not, just remove the battery to confirm this ;)

As for the laser, it's quite misunderstood, it's to give you a second quick fire aim point, not to be the main aiming device, so if your scope is set at 30m for example, you can set your laser at say 10m for anything that is close, so you can literally point and press and get a dead centre hit - so for ratting, it's brilliant, as is the ability to instantly reduce the power, because if your in a farm building you may not want 11.5fpe in case of damage or over penetration :D

Who carries a gun around for ratting at night? Most people will hold up in a central location, or perhaps move to one or two sheds, and although the Pulsar is no light weight, because it's a bull pup it's very light to use when standing, and if your sitting or leaning then weight isn't an issue anyway

It's also half the price of a new Ghost, so not really any kind of comparison there either :censored:

The Pulsar is a much loved/hated gun, it will have it's followers and loathers a plenty, but they are still popular and relevant for a reason - they are great guns which have a good shot count and are accurate, consistent and reliable. They are a predecessor of the Red Wolf, and other than the stock/cylinder set up have a similar design on many respects.

If your looking for competition, there is also the Renegade if your don't want the electronics, or any other bull pup design in the £900+ zone where most good Pulsars live - but not the Galahad as it's just ugly as sin :ROFLMAO:

The best thing to do is give one a go, any bull pup can be a bit top heavy off a bench if your used to a sporter, but standing or kneeling shots are easier, and if it's for rats/vermin/hunting a Pulsar is a great consideration, if using it off a bench most of it's time get a second hand Red Wolf for a few hundred more.

Thanks @jesim1 for your in depth input, I have owned a redwolf previously, I struggled to get comfortable behind the scope, never really had that issue before and put it down to the stock being very curvy in pretty much all dimensions but the action and cycle of the rifle was excellent

Weight does keep being mentioned so a little later I'm going to do a rough experiment.
According to the information I have seen, the difference between a laminate Pulsar and a beech TX is very little.

I've got both, so will weigh them later and compare.
