How is it that he was Luke's father, but he wanted to be Conan's father? He had to be way older.

That's a shame but I had no idea he was as old as that. His rich, resonant baritone added much to his acting and characterisations and he could do it all.
My favourite role of his (doubtless because the film is all-round outstanding) was in Coming To America. His was the comedic role that had to be played straight and he did that with aplomb within a great ensemble cast.
