Custom HW99

So, I bought one of those £25 AA Falcon Ruag stocks and thought I's have a go at getting a 99 to fit into it. It turned out OK, not perfect by any means but I'm happy with it.

I had to shorten the stock by about 3" so I replaced the factory rosewood Schnabel front end with a walnut one (couldn't find any rosewood) and stained it as dark as I could. The inletting wasn't too bad to do but compared to the standard stock the new one was very deep around the trigger guard so that needed inserting deeper and the stock was reprofiled as much as it would go. That still left the trigger blade very short so I made a new set back blade that is about 8mm longer than standard.

The AA stock also gets very shallow towards the front and it got too thin to be comfortable with around the action's forward mounting screw so I reinforced it with a bonded in alloy plate.

The finish was a sod to get off. Even industrial strength stripper struggled with the varnish coat and unfortunately the colour was stained into the wood so it took a lot of sanding to get that back to bare. This resulted in one of the mistakes that I made. I wasn't diligent enough with the prep before staining and finishing so, even though I spent hours getting it what I thought was perfect, a number of "tool marks" appeared when the Danish Oil went on.

Still, for £35 all in, it'll do.

A resurrection of this thread with some more info in case anyone is thinking of having a go.
The scope in the pictures is a 1" tube on a BKL medium mount. When the gun was shouldered my cheek sat well on the comb and little if any adjustment of my head needed to easily to get a good sight picture.
Recently I changed the scope to a Veyron which has a 30mm tube and found that I needed to switch to extra high mounts to get the same sight picture.
Looking closely at the stock I can now see that the cheek comb is actually very high because on the Falcon the action sits on top of the air cylinder and the scope rail is therefore high compared to a springer.
Not a major problem but the Veyron does look a bit like it's perched up too high and that might not suit everyone.

I appreciate the fact that you did so much custom work and didn't just purchase a factory aftermarket stock. Nothing really custom about a duplicated factory stock that merely offers a few options.
Nice job!
I think I know where you got the idea and if I'm correct the one he did is excellent as well

I've just googled that stock, looks like they are still selling them for £25, I can't believe it, that's fecking cheap innit, I've never heard of them before

Yes, really cheap. I’ve got one in “stock” already. Might get another just in case 😀.

I think it might well fit. I'll have a quick measure up later.
Just had a quick look and I don't think that it's a goer. The problem will be the fore end screws.
The centre of the screws are +/- 22mm below the upper surface of the stock and they would need to go where the stock is at it's most shallow at around 34mm. Physically I think it would go and could be made to fit but what it will look like is another matter. If I was having a try I'd tackle this bit first to avoid wasting hours only to find it looks rubbish.
