Well I’ve had it quite a few months now and thought for those that might be interested I’ll tell how I’ve got on with my Cometa Fusion Star .22

IMG_4228.jpeg

It was actually back in July when l bought the first Fusion Star, then a .177 but after a couple of weeks trying at least a dozens different pellets, l wasn’t getting anything like a respectable group at 20 yards, also the gun was very harsh and not very nice to shoot.
Just a couple of the many cards….

IMG_6211.jpeg IMG_6216.jpeg
Not wanting to give up on the gun l decided l would strip it down and see what was going on, after all there had been so much hype about these guns, something wasn’t right! Well something indeed wasn’t right because the quality of the internals was just atrocious. I won’t go into everything that was wrong but the worst was a bent and very badly cut spring. Not wishing now to take this gun any further it went back for a replacement but this time l swapped it for a .22 hoping for a smoother action.

The replacement arrives and to be honest l found no difference and no matter what I tried, the groupings were still pretty awful.

Is it me? I do have PCPs but I’m a springer shooter at heart and always have been. So, again, not wishing to give up that easily l stripped this one down as well and what l found was equally as awful as the first one! Come on Cometa, you must have a quality control department surely??

To cut this long story short l decided to put in a full @WelshWilly kit that, l have to say, along with a few other things like bending the bent cocking shoe straight and getting it flat, transformed the gun. It now cocks beautifully and is no longer harsh to shoot.

IMG_4580.jpeg

However, while it does shoot much better l have found it to be very pellets fussy and extremely hold sensitive.
Although it is now grouping nicely with Superdomes I am finding it hard work. By that l mean l can pick up my HW99 and 77 and hit the targets without too much thought, but the Cometa need a lot of coercing. By the end of the day the card below was slightly improved upon but as l say it took some concentration!

IMG_4728.jpeg

It has certainly been a bit of a journey and a really shame as it’s such a lovely looking rifle. I have heard of others with similar problems so l’m relieved to know it’s not just me! Oh well, I’ll persevere some more with it and maybe one day we might just gel!

Thanks for reading, hope you found it interesting, Woody.

Great review, this is a Rifle I have read a lot about, in particular the Laminate stock version is one I was very interested in, "Bid Dan's Airguns" YouTube channel gave it a positive thumbs up, but when read further reviews, they were mixed, nobody sells the Cometa Air Rifles in West Yorkshire so I think in all honesty I saved myself some grief, which is a shame, they do look very nice🤔

Same issues as @Mike Woody Watkins and then some, stuck with it, no choice really as the warranty was voided after inspection by a well renowned third party and a replacement was sent at extra cost thanks to @Big Dan .
After a fair bit of work and modification, it’s as good as it’s going to get now, a bit of a money pit but such is life.
Would I buy another, NO .
It’s not a go to by any means, looks the part, but not on par with my 99 for example 😉👍

I'm not usually one for publishing my groups on here, but just to bring things back into perspective a bit, these 4 X 5 shot groups were shot down at my club off a front & rear Caldwell bag set up.
I have done extensive pellet testing with this rifle, and the RS appear to be the most consistent, and this includes a lot further out than 25 yards.
The Shoot 'n See targets are standard 1" spots.

Got a Premier Star GP in .22 too. Looks are great and cocking is nice, but accuracy is horrible.
Wonder why the .22 are so crap, compared to the .177.

Probably the good work and service of @Big Dan makes the Cometa hype a succes in the UK.
They are very rarely sold over here in Holland.
Got this thing for sale for little money, but even dogs don't seem to want to p!ss on it...

I think we were all taken in by its looks and reviews, just a great shame the gun itself didn’t live up to the hype.

Yep, we certainly had similar problems and it was only because we didn’t want to give up on the gun that we carried on spending and you, I know spent a lot more than me. However, yours certainly is now a stunner!

I’m a lucky boy then as all of mine have been good and .22 😎

Let’s face it guys they are a budget rifle and not aimed as an AA beater after all, so anyone expecting AA quality at 1/4 - 1/3 of the price is either naive or stupid, but what you get is a gun that can punch well above its price tag, if your competent and don’t mind losing the lifetime warranty you can dive in and personalise, as they respond as well as any other boinger to some bespoke items which seem to be fitted to all guns.

The 400 has five stock options, three calibres and three barrel lengths available so plenty of choice, Im well happy with all mine and will happily buy more

Im going to put things in a little perspective as I have seen first hand some warranty returns with so called home tuning to apparently try to put things right and they’ve been basically butchered and some even arrived back clearly damaged and these guys are asking for refunds, plus we forum members reading threads think everyone can actually shoot a springer straight and their efforts are the best the gun can do, well again first hand I can say some of the so called inaccurate guns were unboxed and shot absolutely fine and were indeed very accurate when tested by another shooter, Im not saying there’s zero legit warranty claims there are of course, but there’s many more head scratching or plain ridiculous claims over the genuine ones, I’m so glad I’m not an RFD 😂

One big plus for me with Cometa is they are reactive to input making changes quite quickly for a global manufacturer, plus the lifetime warranty shows their commitment to their product, after all they’ve been making airguns a while now and another biggy is having @Bigdan as an agent as you know you are going to be well looked after with any gun you buy 👍

It’s a shame some guys have issues and need to fall back on the warranty but from my experience that’s when you find out just how good the RFD and Importers actually are 😉

@Mike Woody Watkins. A couple of months ago I purchased a Cometa Fenix USC Premier Star In .22 calibre and I can honestly say that I didn't experience any of the issues that you mentioned. But what I would say Is, that compared to any of my Weihrauch rifles the Cometa Is very hold sensitive and will nearly always produce a different POI depending on how I hold It.

But now I've mastered the hold and also found the barrels favourite pellet (RWS Superdomes) I'm well happy with the groups that I'm getting while shooting at targets.

But will the Cometa ever replace my SFS tuned HW99s for hunting, no of course it won't.

But for a brand new springer with decent build quality, a re-settable safety catch and a tiger striped stock that only cost me about £340, I really couldn't be happier 👌

I think this thread is quite typical of many gun reviews where one person’s nightmare is another’s dream gun. I own some guns that l absolutely love while others l know just can’t get on with them, my HW95 is one of them, it’s a dream to shoot and is super accurate but some can’t hit a barn door with theirs so yes we are all different when it comes to shooting.

However, while I’m happy to accept that some have great guns, l and others have just been the unlucky ones to get one of the 1 in 5 guns that Cometa make on a Friday. What l wasn’t prepared for was how awful the internals on my TWO guns actually were and how harsh they were to shoot.

@32:1 suggested it’s a budget gun, so we shouldn’t expect AA quality, well l actually dispute that it is a budget gun. Yes, it certainly doesn’t claim to be as good as the high end Air Arms or Weihrauch but equally it’s not what l would call budget gun like say a Remmington Pest Controller for £130. At the £340 for the Cometa l don’t expect to find badly machined and put together parts that you might expect from a £70 Chinese B2!

…..and another biggy is having @Bigdan as an agent as you know you are going to be well looked after with any gun you buy 👍

I certainly do agree with the comment above, throughout my problems @Big Dan has been fantastic, helpful and very understanding and l would recommend anyone wanting a Cometa to buy through him 👌.

This has been an interesting read as I was debating picking one of these up in .177 but may hold off based on these comments. I have a full power 400 USC premier star in .22 which is a very nice accurate rifle, but was thinking of a .177 fusion for some long range accuracy would be a nice but may just save my $.
