We were travelling through the north of England last week coming home from Scotland and took a wrong turning which took us round the outskirts of Bradford which apparently has a clean air zone , I had no idea whether we had been in it or not so I searched online to check , there's nowhere to enter a registration number to find out if I need to pay so this morning I rang Bradford council and was put through to the clean air department who told me they can't / won't check if a vehicle has been in the zone or not as it's all done by computer ! I had no option but to go online and pay £9 or risk a £60 fine but I have no idea whether I was in the zone or not 🤬
Also it's not like ulez where you pay by emissions as cars and motorcycles don't pay but commercial vehicles do , my VW Transporter has the same engine as a Golf of similar age so it's not down to emissions but the shape of the vehicle ?

It's designed like this on purpose to catch people out i think .
If you ask me it's all a money making exercise to boost councils incompetence to manage their finances.
I used to have an old Saab and my road tax was £360 a year as it was deemed it was high on emission's yet on a gas analyser
C.o = 0.0
Hc's = 0.0
Lambda = 0.0
make of that what you will .

It's a big con like all the so called climate damage money making scams / cons.

I got diverted around Birmingham once last year after going elsewhere.
However, I don't know the area at all and the week after I had a fine through the door for going through a clean air zone!! No help or anything off them.

It's very easy to make something definitive out of your emissions figures! Either the testing was incorrectly carried out or the equipment was duff! If your Lambda was actually zero that would mean that the fuel: air ratio was infinite - which would require the exhaust flow to be pure fuel which seems a tad unlikely.... Especially combined with HC of zero which would indicate the exact opposite - no fuel at all in the exhaust

Clean air zones are a joke. They achieve next to nothing apart form raising money.
I am just inside the ulez zone, maybe 1/2 mile down the road, but apparently my emissions ruin the quality of life while the 30 tonner down th eroad is free to move as it wants, and doesnt affect anyone!
It does next to nothing to reduce traffic- if you drive to work, then you drive to work, it just means more of your hard earned getting put in the LAs pocket. The only thing I know its odne is put 4 people I know out of work- they had to sell their cars as they couldnt afford the fines- sorry, payments- and cant ge tto work anymore. 3 of them work outside of the zone which makes it even worse. Public transport is a joke, yes there are buses and trains but its usually an hours journey to anywhere, as oppsed to 20 mins in a car.

Another example of us paying for the mistakes made by others, tied up as a green initiative that in reality is just a tax on getting to work.

I was under the impression it was commercial vehicles normal cars were exempt I hope so as my mam lives in Bradford so go see her a lot but haven't received a fine yet...😱

You're correct , cars and motorcycles are exempt , compared to other air schemes I've encountered if I was in the zone then it definitely needs better signage , or maybe the plan is to fine drivers that don't notice the signs

I only vaguely remember as I once read at mam's the bumf the council sent all the residents thought unless I come over in the work van it won't apply to me. There is some signage on key roads in but as you say not enough information ...👍

I saw one sign at a left fork so maybe I didn't enter the zone as I continued straight on , with no help available to confirm one way or the other I paid £9 for peace of mind , at least I know I won't get a £60 fine 🤬

It’s absolute nonsense isnt it?

Partner works from home, I walk to work
We have 2 old cars, newest is 23yrs old
Both are serviced annually, yet we are penalised if we want to travel into city centres despite both having catalytic converters fitted

What makes me howl with laughter is these cars carbon footprint is basically non existent after all these years, yet a new modern cars carbon footprint will be off the scale . I can’t even begin to imagine how ginormous it would be. Not only all the thousands of parts shipped over to build, but every part has needed a team of workers to design/create….all those people driving into work in their own cars to build a part for a new car…!! Can you even begin to grasp how truly massive the “real” carbon footprint truly is creating all these new cars… it’s literally off the scale.

It’s all ******** to keep everyone spending money (they have or have not) to keep the grotesque capitalist consumerism going, keeping the billionaires creating evermore wealth !!

It disgusts me

Hence, I spend nuthin !!

🖕em’

I’ll go without.

Until recently they had a complicated scheme here which gave your vehicle a 'Crit Air' rating from 0 to 5 and you needed to apply for a certificate for the windscreen. Now our little diesel was rated as 5, despite doing well over 60mpg around town (and nearly 80mpg on a run). This meant that driving into some cities wasn't allowed because they were 0-3 zones or less. Now it has been pointed out that in order to comply people have to spend money on new(er) cars and that penalises the less able who haven't the money. So it's all been scrapped and the rules simplified to petrol cars over 20 years old and diesel over 15 years are excluded from these zones. So that's much easier to understand for everyone. Bad news is we are still excluded from cities because the car is 23, so we still have to buy another car.

Absolutely not but if I lived in the zone I would be using the £3285 per year towards a later vehicle rather than paying £9 per day to use an older one
Get us all in one of the new cars full of trackers and nanny devices.
Preferably an EV that they can switch off at will.
That's an added bonus for our ruling overlords

We have Kahn driving around in a tax payer funded Range Rover and topping up nearly half a million air miles apparently, Starmer flying around the world dozens of times a year and they are saying we should drive our cars less so everyone can breath better air, wouldn't it be good if everyone got together and did exactly that? Not drive their cars for a month just to loose the greedy B******s millions in revenue and show how much they need us in our transport.

Bradford's clean air zone is a weird shape, being mostly the area within the outer ring road but also having a long extension that runs out to Shipley, and thus making it very difficult for traffic to get from the Keighley, Halifax, or Kirklees (Huddersfield) areas to Leeds/Bradford Airport without passing through it.
The best solution I've found is "Don't go anywhere near Bradford !" (It's "crash for cash" city and best avoided anyway)

If you didn't enter the zone but the council have kept the money that they weren't owed surely that is theft. Extorting money by threats!
