  • the Daily hi thread just say hi :)

Can anyone recommend a good pigeon deterrent

Thanks (y)

Have not been able to buy one yet but certainly want to get one.
Mine is a low power one but you can get ones with more power . There is dedicated ones for the job but they are not cheap and often the same as the cheap ones you can buy .

You can get ones with filters that spreads the beam into many beams but I have not tried one .

The Green laser is good for star gazing also and you can use it to point at the stars your are showing kids and other people .

Stating the obvious, don't point any lasers towards trees if aircraft about. I'm not sure bird scaring is well enough known to be a valid justification and there are some fools about.

There was a laser illuminator sold for this exact purpose.

If I remember correctly, you needed a specific qualification to buy and use it. It wasn't cheap to buy either - over £1k. I think airports were adopters of this gear, more than anyone else.

The idea was based on lighting up a spot near the bird and then moving it towards the birds, so they could see it advancing.
I read that the theory was similar to approaching car head lights spooking the birds.

I think the most effective system for buildings is one called avishok. It's multiples of thousands of pounds for a system with good coverage and has its limits - but, it has been proven to change behaviour and will move birds on.

There's birds spikes, bird free gel etc. They can all be seen - so, can look a bit odd.

It's probably down to a local overfeeding birds and the best way is to remove the food - but, good luck with that.

I saw a post hereabouts recently, where cd's/dvd's were hung on strings over a barn entrance - and were quite effective in deterring pigeons.....

Tried CD's and other shiny objects hanging so can move in the Breeze. Works for a very short while but the buggers soon ignore them.
Have cracked off a few cleaning felts (cleans barrel as well) They are gone within seconds but return as soon as coast is clear. I just do not know the answer.

I had a patch of purple sprouting in my garden and fitted it up with lots of CD's hung on poles. Total waste of time, absolutely no deterrent, what the pigeon did not eat they shat upon and destroyed the lot.

One thing about posting on this fine forum, you leave yourself wide open for some cracking answers. 😂

I am a little confused, woodpigeons are a massive pest, and whenever I drive about in the countryside I see thousands, all my shooting life some 60years they have been shot, but every year they are back again, why so protected, 😐😐😐

Yes same here, 60 yrs ago here in N Norfolk all the local land owners would get together and have guns covering all the woodland roosts in the last hours before dark 3 or 4 times each year. The shot birds did not go to waste as what not wanted by the Gun's etc were freely handed out to any household that wanted them. I recall carrying home a dozen or so for Mother. Pigeon was on the table in most houses for the days following the shoot Harder times back in the 50's 60's

BB's via low powered Co2. Good fun for you, not for the pigeons. Trap one, then scare the hell out of it. Trap two or three and the word will get round your garden is not safe. Trying to deter birds with 'namby-pamby, softie' measures isnt going to work.

Are you allowed to trap, and if so, how ?

Does a green laser work on squirrel too?

A work colleague has a problem with them on his bird feeder, but there's no way you'd get a shot off safely in his housing-estate garden. Besides, he's not into shooting.

I gave an old Webley Vulcan to my brother, (wish I hadn't ☹️ ) and he makes up salt pelets to deter the seagulls that his idiotic next door neighbour feeds. He says they work a treat and the gulls don't like it up 'em but Christ knows what they do to the barrel of my old gun.
