BSA Mercury .22 Started after 20 years!

With some time off work I have begun a project that has been waiting about 20 years! My late father bought me a BSA Mercury as a project but life (and death as he has been gone 10 years) gets in the way, So over the last few days I have stripped the stock, stained and started oiling it with boiled linseed oil.

For the action I have the Chambers service kit but hve also purchased from Welsh willy some set back scope mounts, some custom stock bolts and a piston head kit so I can dispense with the pin etc on the original.

So... I will post pics tomorrow but the first stumbling block is removing the trigger block from the compression tube-I have no vice so I may have to purchase a Thor hammer as the rubber mallet I tried today was a bit of a clown show.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated as I have only ever messed with Meteors before.

I’m absolutely no help, but will follow this with interest as I’m in a similar predicament.

The stock is looking great, as for stripping i cant remember how i did my old one about 16 years ago think i used an adjustable on the trigger block would use something to not mark it though.
Enjoy the restoration should be quite nice whem yoir finished

I've not fettled with a Mercury before but the piston and trigger block assembly look very similar to the Airsporter that I have just refurbed myself. To make it easier for yourself I'd say you'd be better off if you could use a vice. Have a look here;

Just recently got a BSA Airsporter Mk1 (1948-1954) in a swap for a pistol I was selling. I love vintage and antique guns so it was an easy decision for me.

As I got it.


Well used and worn through the paint in places on the trigger block/guard.


I hadn't intended to do anything to the rifle but unfortunately when it arrived the stock retaining bolt had snapped during transit through no fault of the seller/swapper as it was well packed from what I could see.


At that point I decided I'd do a "mini" refurb on it as for starters I was going to have...

I used some heat on the trigger block assembly first, fixed it in my vice between two pieces of wood and then just untwisted it apart.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice Chaps. I will need a vice I think.... if this can be done an Airsporter will be next as they are a stunning gun.
