I have a hw99s,i break the barrel a little then load my pellet before fully cocking and returning the barrel in one action.
I feel this is safer than fully breaking the gun then loading the pellet before fully returning the barrel.
Couple of people told me this wasn’t great?

They failed to tell me why,any thoughts?

👍🏻👍🏻

With the scouts, most of the pellets come flying out whilst cocking if done that way.

If your happy and it works for you then all well and good.

I have a HW95 but could not get on with loading while holding the breech open as to me it just felt awkward. If you can do it I can see nothing wrong and I only see it as a better method.
I have since fitted a TbT short stroke kit and love it as the barrel can be safely opened with no spring tension, pellet loaded and then cocked in one motion. Unfortunately I do not think short stroking is an option for an HW99 as it would either reduce power or cause piston slam.

I haven’t shot a break barrel rifle in many a year now, however, I do have a very old break barrel somewhere in my mum’s attic and I always cracked the barrel open and put in the pellet prior to fully cocking the rifle and returning the barrel to its closed position. Never had any problems loading this way.👍💥🤓

In all the thousands of shots I have taken with a break barrel, I have always cocked it fully, loaded a pellet, then closed it to shoot. Only once in all those times did anything go wrong, but you do you. Nothing wrong with that technique if it works for you.

The habit if using an underlever means cocking first.
However, pellet first in break barrel makes more sense provided cocking is done in a smooth quite action, as in a hide, not wanting to disturb target species, It also allows gun to remain uncocked, detent open, ready to be cocked, without fiddling with pellet half way through procedure.
Only drawback is loose pellets and those that snatch the barrel open and snap it back in place.

my 99 has enough space.👍🏻

The way I see it is it must be safer.
It’s impossible to get your fingers trapped in an uncocked gun.
In my gun the pellets don’t move once loaded so it works for me.
Do most guns not open far enough to do this method then?

What ever is practical and SAFE for you is correct, I started to do it pellet before cock at first but found it awkward.
Now I break and cock with my left and load with my right, hand never comes off the barrel thats most functional and safest FOR ME.

Find what works for you and dont let people tell you otherwise 👍🏼

Assuming the pellet is a tight enough fit to stay put during the entire cocking operation, no reason why not. I suppose the only danger would be if the pellet fell out during cocking and you didn’t notice.
This.
It's happened to me a few times when I forgot to keep the barrel facing down.
Loose fit pellets do happen.
Firing a springer without a pellet in the breach is not good for the gun -- must be avoided!
It can also squeeze the skirt out of shape...
If the pellet is tight enough, I suppose it's OK.

Always keep your hand on the barrel of the gun to keep it cocked while loading. Basics.
Same goes for the cocking lever of a underlever. Even more so; maybe that's the habit that transferred to break barrels.
Also, you might just forget you've got a pellet ready in the breach and cock and fire it inadvertently later. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Whatever works for you as long as your fingers are safe!😉

Have always broken the barrel, loaded pellet returned barrel and fire if the pellets are slack just make a simple pellet seating tool, back in the day theoben used to make one

The HW95 must be different as before I short stroked it the only way to load it before cocking was to hold the barrel slightly open under spring tension. This was harder for me to do than fully cocking it so I gave up. Short stroking made loading first the easiest method by far.
