Looking at a hw80 and it’s a tierd gun to be expected with age and use . Question is can it be restored these days without costing a fortune work such as scratches some deep some light , and metalwork tidying up re blackening if that’s the right word first break barrel so new to this
Thanks in advance for any responses

Heck, brother...how's she shoot ? The reason I ask is, if she shoots well just roll with it & accept the " character" added by honest use. If you wish to go completely through the gubbins, you might as well then plan a bit of extra down time & sand back/ steam out dents & refinish the whole stock...you'll likely always see a patch/ spot fix. There's lots of threads/ help in subject here on the forum, but should you not wish to tackle it, @Nath92 , here on forum, does stellar stock work.👍

For the metal work

Blacking there is @AndrewE on here .

Bluing there is @spartan (Shaun at ISP)

For the stock there is @Nath92 if you don’t fancy having a go yourself.

Nice to have mint but also nice to use them and have them in used condition. Get ya head around the few marks from use.
For me it would be a internal service and tune. Clean up n enjoy a quality workhorse..
If you still ain't happy get it restored fully.

What’s your go to for a service and tune ? Do you like the kits or send it in for the work

I thought about sanding it down the stock for example but worried I won’t get the colour match back into the stock from not knowing what oil has been used ect
Either that stock had been refinished (badly) already or there are some oily black marks on it from use. I would give it a deep clean with warm soapy water & a plastic washing up sponge, off the gun obviously. The stocks are varnished with a stain added as standard not oiled btw.

So if I strip that down and get it nice ready for re coating what would you recommend oils/wax wise

To be honest if it were mine I'd give it a good clean first, Whatever you do it'll never look as original as it does now , like I said they were sprayed with a varinsh with stain in originally @cinemod is the one good at refinishing old stocks on here if you check out his posts.

Doesn't @AndrewE do stocks as well?
I've seen some bloody good photos.
I work in a Shotgun stock makers doing all the finishing and refurbishments but honestly you wouldn't want to pay what they charge, £380 Inc vat and that doesn't include touching the checkering as that's extra.
