Afternoon folks.
I usually shoot my 300s (badly) from 6 yards, standing/ unsupported. I stick to this distance as I once tried 10 yards and could only hit the proverbial barn door.
However, a few folks recently have posted their efforts at 20 yards plus, so I decided to give it a go too.

I started off at 10 yards(front end on a tripod )- just to make sure I didn't miss my pellet trap. Results were pretty impressive if I say so myself.
Next I moved to 15 yards. Target (8mm sticky dot) was getting a bit blurred but, again not too shabby.

I then moved back to 20 yards....I knew
that the target was there somewhere but my eyes were struggling at that distance with diopter sights. Result _ again not too bad.
Lastly I went back to 6 yards standing. Oh well... keep practicing!!

Now half of me is saying try a small scope on the gun. Half is saying stick to 6 yards and the third half ( maths was never my strong point) says sell it to someone who could use it better than me.

Results in photo!

Like everyone else, my eyes have also changed with age. Years ago when I shot with aperture sights, I bought a Gehmann Iris which also had a 1.5x magnifier incorporated into it. This helped considerably to compensate for and enhance sighting ability.

First: You focus on the front sight and adjust the iris for clarity, then take a reading on the dial.
Next: You then adjust the iris for clarity at the target, and note the reading on the dial.
Last: You adjust the dial half way between the two readings on the dial.

Unfortunately, I made the mistake of selling all of my match sights awhile ago, but here are a couple of close ups of the Gehmann Iris.PICT0045 (Medium).JPGPICT0046 (Medium).JPG

An adjustable iris thingy might well be the way to go?. I've recently had my eyes tested and opticians said nothing had changed so I can't use that as an excuse!

As per my avatar I shoot mine benched mostly with a scope. I did shoot the AGF 20yd bench comp with dioptres last year but it was only me doing it so I have not bothered this year, unless any one else wants to join me or set up a comp with easier to see targets. I struggled a bit with the last one and I think the new one may be worse.

I've just purchased an FWB 300S with the original iron sights from a well known Member here, and am expecting it to arrive at my RFD before the weekend; so fingers crossed my eyes haven't got any worse, lol.

That's my trouble...dodgy eyesight. I'd like to blame the gun but I can't. It's fantastic to shoot.

I’ve got a FWB300. That’s the one with a standard looking stock but it’s a match rifle. Had it years. Only fired it on rare occasions to check it still works. Still like new. Bought it new. Now I’ve read your post I’ll have to find it and see if my eyes can still use the open sights.

If the seals haven't turned to cheese it will be well worth finding it out and shooting it. If they have, get them changed- it will be worth it
I'm not the best shot in the world but it still puts a stupid grin on my face whenever I use mine.

Sounds like good advice. I have an Original 66 and an Original 10 in the same gun cabinet that hasn’t been opened in years. Time to get them out and check them maybe!

Have you tried an eagle eye insert on your foresight.?
I use one and it does help.

If the 66 is surplus to requirements let me know.

Was that a clear Lexan or glass disc, with a darkened aperture ring around the centre ?
And if so, would you have a link where I could acquire one
No mate, it's basically a magnified insert that goes in the front sight...

This is just the first thing that came up with a Google search, could probably pick one up 2nd hand from someone though..

Thanks for the link. :) I never knew the name of the insert I was thinking of, but I see it on the link you have provided.
I was given a couple of these by a fellow competitor, which fit my Redfield Olympic & International globe front sight's.
They worked very well in giving an unobstructed view.PICT0007 (17).JPG

After reading the replies here, I'm getting to feel a bit more anxious to collect the 300S, hopefully before the weekend.
