We have a lot of rescue dogs, 4 went for a walk today, 3 came home!
A regular fellow walker tripped over in front of them and let go of her rescue greyhounds one of which grabbed our toy poodle and killed her in seconds. The devastation in the family is unbelievable, we are all in bits.
If it was a person who had died I could more easily understand and I have lost friends suddenly but this is so strange. I have experienced sudden loss before and felt anger and angst but this is so weird and completely avoidable if the other dog had a muzzle!
The owners went back to the rescue centre where they got the dog from, not interested, so took the dog to their vets and had it put down. The owner is in bits as the dog had always been fine when they met ours on multiple occasions in the past.
Sorry, don't know where I am going with this, just needed to vent so will stop now!

However you lose your pet it is never easy my friend. I lost my daschund 13th of October 2018 and even though he was 15 he was my best friend and miss him every day. Memories of them will always be with you and although tragic I wish you and the owner of the greyhound my condolences. Kind regrards Stavros.

A few years ago a local dog walker taking her little dog for a walk over the fields came across a woman taking her two greyhounds out, The hounds just set upon the little dog for no reason. The little dog survived the attack but went into shock and wouldn’t eat, and then died about a week later,

In a hardware shop at the weekend a woman was strolling around accompanied by the most elegant beautiful rescue greyhound. I asked if such greyhounds had a temperamental nature and she was quite insulted at the idea. Her dog she assured me was a softy.

I think folk forget that it’s an animal, not a human, and the association with human characteristics is largely just in the head of the owners, but the dog is not obliged to comply.

Is this a known thing about greyhounds ?

Oh feck and numerous other exclamations of despair.

Vent away - many of us are dog lovers and have experienced losing our friends but that is a particularly horrible and pointless trauma.

At least the owners took decisive action to prevent a recurrence which shows remorse.

Your little mate will always be with you in your heart.

Deepest sympathy.

We have 3 aged standard poodles who now refuse the long walk in the mornings, if they had gone, they would have defended Scarlet to the end!
Greyhounds instinctively chase small furry things but not all have the killer instinct. There were 2 of them but only one went all in. The other dogs are as traumatised by the incident as Lisa is!!

That's just awful for all dogs and owners involved - everyone loses in those scenarios. We had a Lurcher for nearly 12 years and although he was really obedient not reactive and had a lovely nature there were a small number of certain types of small fluffy dogs that moved in a certain way that would still awaken the natural instinct in him so I always had to be on the lookout when out and about.

So Sad
What an awful thing to happen & witness ❤️
Had two Collies charge out of a drive way and went to attack me little Parsons Bramble two days ago
Kicked the one fecker and hit the other smack on the head with me stick
Didn’t see the owner, but the gate had been left open 🤬

I had a work colleague who raced greyhounds, and later ran the Retired Greyhounds Association. He always said they make great family pets, but should never be let out without a muzzle on. They are trained to chase and kill little furry things, it's in their blood.

My wife was talking and making a fuss of the neighbours cat one day when it was pounced on by a lady that had been walking her dog. Sadly it was shaken to death. The dog was a rescue dog and the woman had it put down.

There are a couple of greyhounds in my local park that I have seen chase and kill / seriously harm squirrels. The lady just leaves them in agony. I've had to finish off a couple.

Is this a known thing about greyhounds ?

As an owner of 2 rescued ex track Greys, and a Deerhound X Greyhound Longdog/Lurcher (all now deceased) the answer to your question is yes.
As gentle, docile and friendly as they  usually are to their owners and other people, they can occasionally be an absolute nightmare where smaller dogs are concerned, and particularly cats.
People sometimes forget that all racing Greys have been conditioned from day #1 to run down and take smaller animals, and they will sometimes react in an adverse way if an opportunity presents itself after they have been retired, which unfortunately looks as if what has happened here - it is an inherent trait in Greys that is practically impossible to stamp out, like a switch in their head goes to "On" and why all rescued Greys leave the shelters with a supplied muzzle, that must be used 100% of the time while out exercising - most of them are muzzled when on track duty anyway, so it doesn't at all phase them.
Sincere condolences to the OP, this is an awful thing to have happened 😔

Loads of trouble on my perms with hare coursing in the dark, the ones i have seen used grey hounds and a lurcher!

Dude that's terrible.
I have no words that might help, I can not even imagine what you are dealing with

So sorry for your loss and trauma. We lost a dog suddenly recently but it was natural so horrible but nothing compared to what you have been through. Send best wishes

Sorry to read of your horrible experience. A couple of my neighbours had large black labs, a father and son, both were being walked/ exercised in a local field we all used daily, their dogs, independently, were attacked by what sound like a large XL type bulldog. Both the labs killed at the scene, unleashed and with fvcken neds thinking this was funny. Cops went through the motions but pretty uninterested as no people were injured.

I'd say the mental damage was significant and to this day they and others, are now very wary and cautious when out with pets.

Hopefully you can find a way through your situation without too much further trauma.
