850nm v 940nm. A little confused.

This is a pard DS 35 … as we know it’s onboard led which gives a good image ..

But when I switch on the tl3 ( vcsel) the image becomes a touch over exposed and sparklely at this range .. so there might be something in it that led are better for closer ranges and vcsel better for longer ranges… here’s the video, make your own minds up 😊

Bought a DNT Optics Zulus 3-12x about 3 months ago from Optics Warehouse. On my first night-time session (set distance 23 mtr), the IR picture is really grainy. Not a patch on my ATN X-sight 4k Pro!
I once tried a 940 torch on said ATN, and it was grainy, this got me thinking, had OW supplied my Zulus with a 940, instead of standard 850. On checking ir on Zulus it is stamped 850. So what is going on?
The grainy/sparkly picture is really putting me off what I thought would be the dogs danglies. Any thoughts please.
I had the same problem on mine, so brought a nice little 850 from Ian at Blackwoods. Light weight, short and battery life is very good. Focus is easy and it’s good out to around 150-200 in fact I showed on here a few weeks back that I could see a flock of wind turbines that were 3.8 miles away nice and clearly.

With the scopes of today they seem to have the capabilities to suck in a lot of light so the ir torch doesn’t need to be as powerful to get good images ….
and on the other hand scopes that don’t suck in as much light need to be compensated with a stronger ir . 😊

Sorry if it’s already been said but make sure the IR type is the same as what you are using. You can change it in the settings (somewhere!)

There is nothing wrong with the scope. Vcsel IR is very sharp and creates speckles on certain surfaces where LED gives a smooth uniform image. This is the same with all Vscel torches and it doesn't matter what scope you are using.

The original ZHD312R came with an LED ir but during testing of the prototype the Led wasn't good enough it wasn't capable of giving a good image beyond 40m. They released it and started getting complaints so they changed to vscel.

If you want a smooth image at short distances you need to use LED otherwise accept what you have in the knowing that you will be able to see further out with the onboard Vcsel.

Cheers

The IR type makes no difference to the image settings. It has to do with the power being sent to the torch itself. From memory 3 different power levels for Led and 5 for vcsel.

Led can't handle the higher current.

Ok, i've rummaged around & found a compact Pard TL3 850. When I read the 'specs' in the instructions, it states "IR Type-VCSEL". Am I right in thinking this is also a laser ir?? If so, I might have another rummage & see if i've got a LED torch.
I do miss the lovely image on the 4K-Pro, but not the weight.
Yep. Pard do two version of the TL3 - laser and a LED. Sounds like you have the laser verion.

The LED modules do produce a more natural looking image. The Laser module tends to give a slightly crispy "frosted" look to everything. The earlier 312 Zulus had a LED and the later ones a VCSEL 850nm module as I understand it.

Yeah, my Zulus V2 has a VCSel 850nm IR. Got to be honest though, the images are superb with no frosting at all.

Not sure if they’ve updated the run mid production or not.

Have you tried focusing it?

Well just been out in the garden and the difference between the onboard laser on the Zulus v1 and an LED fitted to the side of it is incredible at 25m, the LED wins hands down, the laser image from the onboard Zulus is nowhere near as clear, awful in fact
