3 prison guards

I think that you would think differently if you had been the one to have pulled the lever on Andrew Malkinson, for example?

Many of us would have been happy to pull the lever on "The Birmingham Six" after the pub bombings - especially in the light of "definitive forensic evidence" from their hands that they had been handling explosives.

Good thing that nobody actually could as they were later released - at least those who survived - after 16 years in prison.

Their alibi had been that they were all playing cards together at the time of the bombings - later forensic evidence revealed that the substance on their hands could have come from playing cards as they had claimed all along.

There is a formula for working out the length of drop to break the neck cleanly based on weight, height and build etc. Also the position of the knot or loop plays a part as it's usually placed just under the chin. I'm sure you'd find someone willing to have a go at it.
Yes i was aware there is a formula to get the correct length of drop for a clean break of the neckwhich is normally the 2nd and 3rd vertebrae and the metal ferrule that the rope passes through to form the loop in th rope is always placed on the left hand side of the jaw so that at the end of the drop it causes the body to rotate 90 degrees to the right i think to insure that the spinal cord is severed.

I'm not against Capital punishment per se but it should be reserved only for the most heinous crimes where there is absolutey no shadow of doubt that the person is guilty i.e cases where though forensics is used, as now they are in most crimes, even without forensics it's obvious the person is guilty.
Or has i said in my previous post for whole term lifers who will never be released they can have the option of execution if they do not want to spend the rest of their life in prison.

So according to that logic, if logic is the appropriate word, from what you've said there it's one continuous circle then.
I think you already have.

Why the sudden change from your original now deleted post have you had some sort of epiphany or damascene moment.

I think prison guards should be equipped with stab vests, truncheons & tasers for their own protection, & all inmates denied access to boiling water or oil, & only allowed plastic cutlery.

It could still be said that a wrongly convicted man faced with life imprisonment might choose death instead.
I agree with giving them the choice If there is no doubt at all, for example, Michael Adebolajo the killer of Lee Rigby.
Who was filmed doing it by numerous cameras and gave a ranting speech to camera whilst still holding the bloody knife.
Can't be any doubt there.
I would also include the OXO Copacabana thing in that as well.

Their choice would be kept secret and the results would be,

"I want to be executed" = that will be life in solitary then.

"I choose life imprisonment" = get the rope tied.

What does "or lomf bunch " mean?

Protected group, supported and aided by a cabal of do-gooders and dodgy legal aid types runs rings round the authorities. These types of prisoners are heros in prison, and run the places, also you get better treatment / food / other by converting either faith or gender in many cases.

Anybody complains and the legal aid millionaires and the do gooders decend, and prison officers career over.

Like the people that let out killers and rapists to re-offend after hearing a sob story, the muppets who give these extras to the worst offenders are not the ones caught up in the blowback, that is the general public, and officers / coalface workers in turn.

Maybe when these decisions are made, or parole boards meet, they should be told:

"Your decision, but if so and so who you are convinced is safe, and want to release / allow access to stuff others don't get does any harm to anyone, then YOU will be getting procescuted too!"

Every knows what is going on in our prisons, plus if someone is ALREADY doing 55 years, what are they going to do?..... put him in prison?

Supermax / Russian / Salvador prison way is the way to keep people safe, but we are too soft / hampered by do gooders ECHR stuff.

Behave like an animal, get treated like one.......

Prison should be a place of rehabilitation. The variability of life shows that things go wrong to good people. Further, as we know within the airgun community how insane the laws are regarding airgun, then we are aware that all laws are not made equal and without careful consideration at times. We also know theres no one size fits all, so to do what the US is doing without just cause, then you accept a level of tyranny from governement. Im not addressing any particular event, we know there are things that needs to be fixed but to allow governance to do what they want, without regulation, then you leave a gap in where terrible person in power that can change the scope of society to the detriment of our and generations thereafter’s future.

Everything starts on the bedrock of strong foundations

I completely agree about the process of Justice being essential and that some people might benefit from "rehabilitation."

Surely there should also be an element of "punishment" as well?

One of the first things needed for that is to stop the supply of drugs into prison - given that a lot of low level acquisitive crime is driven by addiction.

Personally, I would make any comforts or additions - like a mobile phone - dependent on good behaviour as a reward to be earned.
TV?
Internet? (Restricted, obvously!)

How "comfortable" does it need to be in prison?
How warm does it need to be?
How do you further punish those behaving dangerously?
Solitary confinement?
Bread and water type (not literally) diets?

"Lifers" do not need to be "rehabilitated" if they are serving a "full life" sentence - they are never getting out.
Sentences should be served in full - with extra time added in the case of bad behaviour rather than "Time off for good behaviour" being given.

Judges and "Sentencing Guidelines" need a shake-up too.
Often far, far too lenient which is no deterrent at all.

This will need more Prisons, more Prison Officers and more tax input to finance these.

Prisons could be run far more efficiently and securely .
More chains . Smaller cells .
More robust encouragement to behave and not return.
Far less gym time food TV and privilege
Far more chain gangs . Clearing rubbish and ditches if you want to eat .

I agree with these points, also. Of course, the spectrum of human behaviours, rehabilitation is beneficial for x% in society. Deterrence and punishment that is equal to the crime would be a part of it, as bad behaviour should come with fair and just consequence

A shake up, indeed. Dogma is prevalent in the UK, when presented with new verifiable truths, we must adjust to the situation and update our laws, guidelines. Politics and Laws tend to be reactionary though

The overarching problem is that there isn't enough funding in all these areas to finance research, infrastructure and competency in every faucet that has been spoken about; and thus we face being stagnant and not acquiring new knowledge on how to deal with different crimes, updating laws the complex nature of so many different situation of society. Simplifying, for the most part, doesn’t work (though it also has its place, I believe)

Have we not seen in all areas in our own lives and experiences when these things are satisfied, things just work better?

But its also nuanced in a sense, we cannot satisfy everyone and goes back to the ideals of Jeremy Bentham in utilitarianism, ideals of a system that works for the majority of society is the most beneficial one. This goes back to the very roots of what we want our society to be, lay these foundations down and work from there

A question that shoots of from this is, how do we prevent instead of react to crime? What makes a civil, just society in which every member can feel included and participates within?
