Today is my birthday and basically I want to own a 1984 HW77. That's the year I was born and I think it would be great to own a rifle as old as me.

So if anyone has any information that would help me get my hands on one would be much appreciated.

I'm also looking for things to look out for when buying one. Are there any issues or faults to keep a look out for?

I've made a wanted thread but obviously this kind of discussion isn't allowed on there hence this thread.

Thanks!

Happy birthday Al,

The 77 was first introduced in ‘84 so you’re looking for a Mk1 rifle. Not many K variants made in Mk1 so more likely to find a full length rifle. The Mk1 had a few distinctive features prior to the Mk2 and 3.
The lever latch was on a sprung ball retainer, no button or catch the pressure or push like the 2 & 3.
The foresight was an integral part of the lever latch and was not removable.
The lever latch was aluminium cast, prone to the flanks cracking where the lever located, probably leading to later Mks or after market catches being fitted.
The loading aperture was narrower, mk2 was a bit wider and the 3 was almost to the stock line (like the later 97s)
The trigger block had only two scope recoil pin locating holes to the top face.
The pistons were all 25mm sets. Up till mid ‘90s

Serial numbers give a clue but there may be no exacting evidence, using the HW database is a good bet but not always spot on.

I had an early mk1 .22 dated 1983. I have a mk1 .177 which is 1984, and harder to find if small cal is your preference.

Attached list helps as a start point.
I’ll try to find some other pics which relate to the above.

Good luck with your hunt.
Dave

Thanks for the birthday wishes and big thanks for the information! That is really helpful. This is going to be a fun search I think!

Best of look with finding a mk1, they are great guns, mine are mk2s long and k versions both 1986 in 177 can’t rate them highly enough.

Belated congratulations. And good luck finding the HW 77 Weihrauch rifle. The oldest one I bought, and the first of my 10 Weihrauchs, was in 2009. I still remember that beautiful box, and when I opened it, there it was.

¡¡¡Excellent information!!!. Thank you very much for it. It's very interesting.!!!
By the way, there should be a book dedicated exclusively to collecting all this data, characteristics, and history.
I'd mention Air Arms, Weihrauch, and Webley.

Happy Birthday, your post made me take mine out of the rack and check the serial numbers, turns out it's a HW77 '85 Mk1, which my father bought from new and I inherited. He was not a tinkerer (or had any of his guns serviced) so I suspect it's as original as you can get.

Still shoots great, even with a really old Model 10 Original 4 x 32 scope, although I did stick a more recent scope on it to see what it could do, but should really put the old one back as it seemed to shoot better with it.

Hope you find what your looking for.

Feel free to post a picture! It might not be available to me but I'd love to see it

The database can help but as its nothing to do with Weihrauch some of the date can be wrong like people claiming to have bought HW45s and some other models years before they were made never mind sold.

Disclaimer

  • I am NOT affliated with Weihrauch Weihrauch / Weihrauch GmbH & Co. KG in any form whatsoever.

The stocks are also slightly different across the models , the MK1 doesn’t have a bear trap so the inletting is different in the later models to accommodate it and the spacer ,
The MK1 stock is slimmer and squarer at the fore end .

Do you have a preference in calibres as you may find the .22 easier to locate than a .177 as the .22 calibre was more popular, quite a few of the earlier 77’s had their loading ports increased in size as it made it easier to load, the factory “mk2” 77’s followed suit
Anyway good luck in your quest

I'm happy with either a .22 or .177.

Thanks again for all the info. I've learnt a lot. There's a lot of history behind these rifles.

Here’s number 839, Beeman stamped of course in the US. This is in .177. Although officially introduced in 1984, The List puts manufacture date for this one as 1983, which is likely correct. Have to build them before you can launch them. They have their quirks, most notably the front sight/latch assembly, but are wonderful guns and there are fixes for the front assembly. As others have mentioned, this is one of my airguns that won’t be available until my estate sale. Belated happy birthday and good luck with your search. Let us know when you find one.

Feel free to show pictures! I've actually found one and hopefully it's on it way to me as we speak. It wasn't 100% what I wanted but I didn't want to look a gift horse in the mouth!
