Hi all
.177 or .22 Sub 12 for a rat job?
Aware this has probably been discussed to death!

Curious as a noob who's only shot inanimate stuff (so far) - has this been tested or discussed realistically anywhere?

I realise it's probably a personal preference thing, but my gut feeling would be .22 for rats but maybe .177 for rabbits. Purely on the inexperienced guess that the smaller pellet would lend itself to more penetration and some energy would be wasted if it passes through a rat, whereas the bigger pellet would translate more energy to damage earlier after impact? This is where somebody tells me that a .22 will go straight through a rabbit head anyway, so a flatter trajectory is more useful haha.

Edit: apologies & thanks @littlegreen - still typing while you replied!

Haha for me now, I'm 52% .22 and 48% .177 😁
I'm sparticus 53% .177 47% .22 joking apart I consider .22 to be a hunting tool I know a lot of folks would disagree but I generally shoot targets and .177 is the daddy IMHO

You'll hear a plethora of personal preferences; you' ll hear that .177 is easier to be accurate with, you'll hear that .22 has a softer cycle, that.22 puts more thump on target, that .177 is cheaper to shoot - all these have a bit of validity. Just pick one, shoot it, learn it & be good with it....good is all that matters. Time spent is the key, nothing else....

'cept them who know their onions, shoot springers.😊👍

Aii I'm the same! Currently using an un neutered deltawolf so it's a all in one calibre for me, from sheds to fields that don't quite justify a rimfire it ticks every box! 😁
