My son has just started to show enough maturity to follow instructions to shoot in the garden so I have broken out the old stuff I kept when I stopped shooting about 15 years ago.

We are lucky to have a 25m long garden but he has been shooting at about 10m with my old Gamo Hunter 440 WT in .22 with an old pistol sight on top.

I’ve been enjoying shooting with him so want to look for a budget multi shot pcp airgun to shoot a bit more distance with. I have an old Nikkostirling Nighteater 6 x 24 scope.

As I am assuming things have moved on in the last 15 years I am looking for advice as to what to buy.

I’ve put it through the cheats answer of ChatGPT and it came up with a Reximeth Myth as the best brand new option but I’m just using that as a starting price point of about £350. New or second hand I’m open to suggestions.

Any advice with a bit of detail is most welcome.

Probably about £500 at the moment.

Have a look at the new Reximex Pretensis K. Big Dan has them for £550 and will do a deal for AGF members, if you message him.

The reviews so far are pretty impressive.

With that budget I’d keep it simple and reliable - Gamo GX40, GX250 or Phox (same action with different barrel and cylinder lengths) with a Hawke Vantage 3-9x40 scope.

That’s enough gun and scope for everything the Sub 12 air gunner can do in a back garden, humane pest control, and a whole lot more besides.

Those Gamo rifles are basically BSA, made by them in Bham with decent barrels, simple unregulated actions and great consistency. Available new so you’d have warranty (not that you’re likely to need it), and want for very little out of the box. A common mod on these is to remove the barrel band (to improve accuracy/remove the possibility of it pulling on the barrel) and use the screw in the trigger as it’s slightly longer and helps reduce pull weight.

I’m new and shoot target with .177. I got a Reximex Lyra recently (£500 including scope, mod and stirrup) and so far pretty pleased with it. It was a bit pellet fussy, but after testing a few batches will do 5p groups with Diabolo fields or barracuda 8 pellets at 22 yds.

Looking up since I bought it, it seems most budget rifles are decent these days. Others I would look into:

Kral Puncher
Lee Enfield Sentry

For a little more you could look at a used HFT 500 (might be a stretch but finding one for £500-600 is doable) and this is what I’m likely to get next.

If you’re looking for .22’s, I’m less help to you :P

I was going to say the Reximex Pretensis K or the Kral Nish or Kral Puncher K all good guns and around the budget you have.

The good news is that there are a lot of great guns at your price range! I had an NP-02 and really liked it. It’s got a great shot count and is quite compact. I really like all of the Gamo guns (GX40 is fab and quite accurate). Have fun shopping!!!

Grab your passport, jump in the car.
Take the scenic route down past Shrewsbury and then Leominster, through Brecon and end at Neath Gun Shop.
There you will find the Gamo Riser kit including two mags and scope for £199, or SMK 900 also £199.
Fancy a bullpup? SMK P15 £299, and there were some P35s for £325.
Some secondhand stuff like a Kral NP02 for £275. Its a 300mile round trip, but you will save a fair bit.

I think I'd always advocate looking out for a used item of decent quality, rather than buying a new low end example as a first rifle
You'll end up with something you can grow with a bit, before the inevitable itch to upgrade, kicks in and a decent used rifle, should hold its value, where the low end rifles won't if bought new.
The financial kick in the goolies, when selling a rifle, bought new, can smart a bit

I'd be tempted to search for something from BSA's SE range, Air Arms 400/500 series, or a HW100
