Having freed up some stagnant money (by offloading some of my unused guitar gear) I’m thinking I might treat myself to a better springer than my Remington Sabre TH as I’m happy with my PCPs. Really gassing for a Wiehrauch. My max budget is around the £550 mark but ideally I don’t want to spend all of the money if I can avoid it so I’m in HW77 and below territory. My arthritis says my Sabre is too heavy for me. Like the idea of an underlever but have also read horror stories about the loading block on the HW57. Whilst looking at various videos, shops and write ups spotted the HW99. Is it a case of “it’s that cheap for a reason”?

It does the job, easy tuned to make better. Bit souless, but then its a tool, so if thats what yer need itll suit.
Theres plenty you can do to custom it so its more "yours"

HW99 is a good choice. Fairly light and shoots nicely at mid 11's in .22, if there's a galling issue it's a quick and easy fix. I liked mine so much that I fitted a v-mach kit and glided the piston. Fitted a CS700 stock, set back trigger, quick release link pin, lovely thing to shoot.

The 99 springer has an almost cult like following on here, (and not without good reason) but unless you are into fettling your own rifles, which you may well have to with a 99, my advice would be to try and source a 2nd hand one off here, that you know has been sorted.
If weight is an issue, don't rule out a 30, particularly if you are only killing paper.

As above, 99 or 30, tried and tested, 77 and 97 heavy IMO, balance well, perfect if you shoot rested as I do 👍

The HW99 performs well sub 12 shooting in the high 10s ,22 calibre and lower 10s, for 177.
Any benefit going higher is lost with harsh shot cycle and added recoil.
Now priced 5p less than £300 notes, I would hunt for a deal closer to £250 or purchase second hand.

£550? A shame really you are in HW97 kt territory and a cheapo 3-9x40 mountmaster or some such scope too.
But Artur Itiss is a cruel feller right enough .
The HW99 is good all HWs are good, the HW57 is malligned by too many too easily they are just as well made as any other HW and designed and built to a specific task lightweight undervever version of the HW50 Or in europe 99.
the HW57 has lighter barrel and lever set up improving both weight and balance making it as a full into the 11s ftlb springer with a light weight open sight ergonomics hunter/ sporter stocked springer a handful to shoot well bigger internals than the HW99 only add to the harsh commotion on firing the HW57 is probably best left to the experienced shooters who have the patience to master its shooting characteristics and vallue its truly incredible balance accuracy and real full uk power in such a lovely little springer. Not by any means for everybody.
Having said all that its soft to cock its super light so you can walk miles with it its probably good for an arthritic.
The next option and the one that just works is so easy to shoot consistant and accurate is the HW35 its about £400 if you shop about heavy enough to absorb those negative vibes yet light enough to be handy to carry about its the factory built short stroke HW80 the tuners hanker after yet its got a locking barrel and has been around forever, is softer on the shot cycle by means of the short stroke hw80 ish set up and its super easy to cock.
((? yes good, HW57 ? incredible but specialised not for everyone some struggle to man/ woman it up.
No! I think if i were you i would go HW35 new in a box and a nick Hawke scope in some sturdy mounts for your £550 British pounds. Just sayin.

I picked my 99 up for £260 brand new from my local farm shop (TFM) and am very fond of it, its a bit twangy but ive resisted the urge to fettle it so far as its a new gun. Lovely, light little rifle and fun to shoot

Why cannot HW solve the galling issue with this gun ? If your buying a gun with a known problem they need to sort it out PERMANENTLY. If an aftermarket fix can sort it why not HW ?
