how do you knowledgeable lot how can you tell what height scope mounts are on a rifle and witch part do you measure

Measure from top of dovetail rail to bottom of scope.
Depends on rifle - height of dovetail above barrel, etc
Site like Ramsbottoms will give scope mount dimensions from bottom of cradle to dovetail cut out, etc,

Some scope brands give the dimension 's of the scope and some scope mount manufacturers give the mount dimensions.
You need to watch for scopes with an external Erector tube spring if going for a one piece mount.

Sportsmatch have this also but it may not work for all combinations of scope, mounts and rifles.
